Neutrogena Cloud-Tech sunscreen featuring BEMT sun protection technology

Neutrogena has launched two new facial sunscreens in the United States featuring bemotrizinol, better known as BEMT — a sunscreen filter that may sound new to American consumers but has a much longer history internationally.

The launch follows the US Food and Drug Administration's 2026 decision to add BEMT to its over-the-counter sunscreen monograph, marking the first new sunscreen active ingredient added in the United States in more than two decades.

For Australian beauty lovers, however, the story is a little different. BEMT itself is not a newly discovered sunscreen ingredient, and Australian consumers should not assume that Neutrogena's newly announced US products are automatically available here.

What exactly is BEMT?

BEMT is a broad-spectrum ultraviolet filter designed to provide protection across UVA and UVB wavelengths. It has already been used internationally, including in sunscreen markets outside the United States.

Its arrival in the US is significant largely because American sunscreen regulation has historically moved differently from markets such as Australia and Europe when it comes to newer UV filters.

That makes the Neutrogena launch interesting beyond the two products themselves. It reflects a wider shift in the US sunscreen market towards formulations and filters that consumers elsewhere may already recognise.

What has Neutrogena launched?

Neutrogena says its new Cloud-Tech platform combines BEMT with lightweight formulation technology designed to make daily facial sunscreen feel less heavy on the skin.

The first products announced with the technology are Clear Face Sunscreen SPF 60 and Ultra Sheer Daily Face Sunscreen SPF 70, both launched for the US market.

The emphasis on texture is notable. Sunscreen is increasingly being positioned not simply as something worn at the beach, but as part of an everyday beauty and skincare routine. Fashion Weekly has previously explored this shift in Skinscreen 101, where SPF increasingly sits alongside serums, moisturisers and makeup rather than being treated as a separate summer product.

Why the Australian sunscreen story is different

Australia has one of the world's strongest reasons to take sun protection seriously, and sunscreen products sold here operate within an Australian regulatory environment that differs from the United States.

That means an SPF number or product launch announced overseas should not automatically be treated as equivalent to an Australian-market sunscreen.

It is also why Australian consumers should look for products specifically supplied and labelled for this market rather than assuming an overseas sunscreen is interchangeable with one sold locally.

Daily sunscreen use is increasingly part of year-round skincare rather than something reserved for hot summer days. We looked at that changing habit in SPF in Winter, including why UV protection remains relevant when the temperature drops.

Does this mean the new Neutrogena sunscreens are coming to Australia?

Not necessarily.

The announcement relates to the US launch of Neutrogena's new Cloud-Tech products. At the time of writing, Australian shoppers should not interpret the announcement as confirmation that Clear Face Sunscreen SPF 60 or Ultra Sheer Daily Face Sunscreen SPF 70 will be released locally.

Product names, formulations, SPF claims and regulatory approvals can differ between countries, even when products appear under the same global beauty brand.

Fashion Weekly's take

The most interesting part of Neutrogena's announcement is not simply another high-SPF sunscreen arriving on shelves in the United States.

It is another sign that sun protection and skincare are becoming increasingly difficult to separate.

Consumers want broad-spectrum protection, but they also want products that sit comfortably under makeup, work with existing skincare and feel pleasant enough to use every day. That demand is pushing sunscreen formulation further into the beauty conversation.

For Australians, the BEMT announcement is also a useful reminder that a breakthrough in one country may be something consumers elsewhere have encountered for years.

The new Neutrogena Cloud-Tech sunscreens have been announced for the United States. Australian availability has not been confirmed, so local shoppers should check Australian product information and availability before purchasing.
