In the lead-up to Cairns Fashion Week this June, we have chatted with some of the creative minds behind the upcoming runway shows, which are set to be at the forefront of Australian and international fashion, all set against the breathtaking backdrop of tropical Far North Queensland.
Label: Balaquin
Tell us a bit about your label and your journey so far.
Balaquin was founded by three women, all with specialty skillsets. Our designer Kiara started her fashion career in 2018, aged 19, and founded her own label before joining forces with marketing specialist Natalie and operations specialist Tamara to create Balaquin.
Our passion for reducing oceanic microplastics led us to use only 100% natural fibre materials (organic cotton, linen etc). On top of that, we try to be as sustainable and conscious as possible in our entire production process, from working only with family-owned small manufacturers to using environmentally-friendly packaging.
How did you come to be involved in the inaugural Cairns Fashion Week?
Given that we are based in Queensland in the Bundaberg area, it is important to us to build up a local footprint and increase the visibility of our brand in the region.
Which Cairns Fashion Week event can fashion lovers attend to see your designs?
We are showing at the Neo Tanks Showcase on June 24th at 12:30pm.
What excites you most about Cairns Fashion Week?
Having launched less than three months ago, immersing ourselves in the incredible world of fashion and getting the Balaquin name out there really excites us! We're also excited to see current trends and what other designers are putting forward.
