I love a good Italian restaurant and on my recent trip to Sydney, I had the pleasure of dining at Da Mario in Rosebery.
A little off the grid, this proves to be the destination of the moment. Think of it as Alfresco dining at its finest. This hot spot is one of Sydney's leading pizzerias, offering wood-fired pizza and classic Italian food.
My experience led me to enjoy their quality service, a traditional menu of fine flavours and mouth-watering dishes alongside good wine and a relaxed atmosphere. What more could I want?
I can’t go past a good Antipasti. I gets me weak at the knees just thinking about it! Boarded up in colour and design, the selection of local cured meats melted in my mouth as I sipped on a matched red wine.
Then they brought out the Arancini Ai Quattro Formaggi, which stole the show with their four cheesey filled insides.
The kitchen made the dishes the way they’re supposed to be made. Authentic, traditional and delectable and here is why. Da Mario is one of the 19 restaurants in Australia who is part of Italy's prestigious ‘Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana’ (Member 153) and who was the first restaurant in Australia to join the organisation. This is a globally respected organisation that aims to promote and protect the “True Napoletana Pizza” and ensures the product is made in accordance with the international regulation registered. Da Mario religiously follows the disciplines of this organisation, which means no variations.
Though the menu is familiar, beginners may need a few items decoded. But their famous woodfired pizzas needs little explanation. The heart of the restaurant flaunts an enormous three tonne red pizza oven imported from Naples and it might just to be the key in creating such deliciousness. Well, the facts speak for themselves. Sydneysiders love this staple so much that Da Mario actually pumps out over 600 pizzas per week!
The pizza sauce is what every other sauce wishes it could be. And if you had to choose only one dish, then skip everything else and delight your tastebuds with the crisp base and fresh flavours of their pizzas. They’re not known for being the best in the business for nothing.
Their menu offering is impressive and in particular I have to praise the home-made pasta for what it delivered. The Casarecce Al Pomodoro is a short pasta with tomato, garlic chilli and basil and ricotta salata complemented by parmesan shavings and cracked pepper.
And get excited about dessert! Their decadent treats are heaven on a plate. The only challenge is pacing yourself to ensure there is enough room for their Tiramisu, Panna Cotta or Chocolate Mousse.
