Upclose with Melanie Tjoeng

Mel Tjoeng is a photographer you will not forget.

When did you first pick up a camera?

I've always taken photos, since I was a child but I didn't consider it to be a career until about 5 years ago.

How did you find your way into fashion photography?

I kind of stumbled into it through doing some portfolio shoots and then I found that I loved that kind of photography and I haven't looked back since.

What inspires your work?

All sorts of things, I always shoot from the heart, I need to be able to tap into something greater than myself. I'm also inspired by other photographers, pictures I see around me, landscapes, flowers and people. I find there is a constant source of inspiration in all things.

If you work with any model or designer dead or alive who would it be?

I'd like to shoot with Ashley Smith, I think she is so beautiful and unusual. In terms of labels I would love to shoot for Alexander Wang, Oliver Peoples, ACNE, Goyard and Alice McCall.

Any advice you could give anyone wanting to make it in fashion photography?

Do what you love, shoot all the time, hustle, look at other peoples work, the more you shoot the better you get and most importantly shoot from the heart.
