Think of it as, finding a job, is your job...
Job hunting is the type of activity that starts out super exciting but can quickly bring you down. Sending out resume after resume can feel extremely de-motivating. Whether you have freshly graduated and are looking for work or have decided to take on a new career path, here are 6 tips on how you can stay motivated during the dreaded search.
1. Keep a routine
Especially for those who aren’t working, make sure to keep a routine. Don’t let yourself fall into the life of half-day lie-ins and procrastination. Instead, wake up early, eat breakfast and get some exercise in. A simple walk around the block will do (and it’s free!).
There is no greater reward than helping those who need it most. Whether it’s at a hospital, shelter, or for a non-profit organisation, volunteering will not only have you feeling like you’re contributing but you may also find some job prospects or new networks.
3. Reach out to people/network
Make sure that you are staying in touch with old friends and colleagues. Maintaining a network of positive and supportive people not only helps you feel connected but may also provide you with leads to job opportunities. It’s all about putting yourself out there.
4. Positive thinking
It is very easy to slide into a negative mindset when applying for jobs. The silence, refusals and waiting times are all frustrating. Make sure that you are actively working on positive thinking. Focus on the knowledge and skills you do have rather than wandering on ‘what ifs’.
5. Manage your expectations
Along with thinking positively, you want to make sure that you manage your expectations. Not every job is going to be for you and you will most likely have to deal with the word ‘no’ occasionally. Don’t let yourself be put off by this and instead look towards the next opportunity.
6. Don’t give up
Most importantly, don’t give up! Remember to persevere. Jobs are something that won’t necessarily fall into your lap. You have to go out and look for them.
