Dancing is a great way to get your heart rate up, which increases your fitness, gets rid of excess body fat, and builds lean muscle, core strength and posture. Because dancing is an enjoyable activity (rather than doing millions of pushups or going for a long, boring jog), I find that people that take my classes are more likely to return. They not only feel fitter and better within themselves, they also enjoy the musical and social aspects of the class.
There are the more traditional methods of dance that I personally love, such as ballet, ballroom and tap – which are all great for fitness! If you'd like to try something with a little more edge, hip-hop and breakdancing have made a massive comeback in recent years.
Something that I heard of recently that sounds like fun and would be great for beginners is a new trend in social dance called 'No Lights, No Lycra.' If you haven't heard of it, No Lights, No Lycra started from the basic belief that everyone can dance. At a No lights, No Lycra class you will find no teacher, no tight Lycra and no lights – they basically pump the music, kill the lights and let you jump around as much as you want for the duration of the class! I love this idea, because even though it's not 'dancing' in the more traditional sense, it's a great way to ease yourself into dance or to go and get some exercise without worrying about people seeing your two left feet in action.
I'm so happy to have been chosen as the 'Healthy You' ambassador for Beautiful You Australia. I've made a career out of dancing and I can't wait to share this with the ladies attending the event!
