The epitome of old-school Hollywood glamour, and former Olympic Decathlon champion, Caitlyn Jenner, wowed EVERYONE as she accepted her ESPN Sports Award for Excellence in Sports Performance, the Arthur Ashe Award.
While many adored her custom white Versace gown, Jenner displayed courage and bravery with a warm, funny, poignant, powerful and important speech. With a nearly ten minute speech that touched on her athletic career as Bruce Jenner, her fear of coming out as transgender to her family and her hopes for a future where trans people can feel comfortable in their own skin.
"If you want to call me names, make jokes, doubt my intentions, go ahead, because the reality is, I can take it. But for the thousands of kids coming to terms with who they are, they shouldn't have to take it," Jenner said. "It's about what happens from here, it's not just about one person, it’s about thousands of people, it's not just about me, it’s about all of us, accepting one another. We're all different, that's not a bad thing, that's a good thing."
Jenner’s acceptance speech was preceded by a 13-minute long mini documentary about her life and career, which highlights the many struggles and challenges of her journey – it brings you to tears, but it will leave you feeling empowered and inspired by the more than courageous woman.
The Kardashian clan was out in full force in support of Caitlyn, with all six of the biological Jenner children (Kendall, Kylie, Brandon, Brody, Cassandra and Burt) attending the event, along with Kim, Khloe and Kourtney, and let’s not forget her beamingly proud mother, Esther.
I recommend each and every person to listen to Jenner’s speech, as I promise you will be left feeling inspired and change the way you judge and shame your fellow comrades. We are all human after all.
