Celebrity makeup artist Gina Brooke talks confidence

Gina Brooke applies makeup

Gina Brooke is a celebrity makeup artist that has worked with some of Hollywood’s biggest names.

Brooke has over 25 years of experience as an internationally acclaimed makeup artist, is a Brand Ambassador for Australian skincare brand Intraceuticals and is the mastermind behind the key makeup looks for Madonna’s iconic Rebel Hearts tour.

We caught up with Brooke to find out whether her job is really as glamorous as it seems along with what it really takes to make it!

Madonna takes the stage

Where did you find inspiration for the makeup looks you created for Madonna’s upcoming Rebel Hearts Tour?

GB: Love and Romance was the central theme of this show... the original looks stemmed from the work that Madonna and I created around the promotion of her Rebel Heart album.

Some of her makeup has been modified by the artist I trained on tour. [The finished look had] more of a matte finish and heavier brows than what I had originally created.

Although this is my fifth world tour, as a working mother, I opted to not go on the last two tours and focus my time and creativity towards consulting for tours and with comsmetic brands along with editorial work.

Is the life of a celebrity makeup artist as glamorous as it would appear?

GB: It's actually completely the opposite of what people may think... The life of a celebrity makeup artist is inundated with long hours, lots of organisation and endless travel.

However, there are some amazing moments. For example, expressing your creativity and seeing it published is a wonderful feeling. Most recently, I created real gold eyeshadow with an artisan jeweller for Madonna and seeing it on her is extremely rewarding as an artist.

What does it take to be the best?

GB: Hard work, dedication, passion, organisation and most of all, being a professional.

What is your top beauty tip for a glamorous night out?

GB: My top beauty tip for a glamorous night out is flawless skin, enhancing bone structure and a bold lip.

Have you ever experienced a ‘diva moment’ when working with a celebrity?

GB: People tend to forget that celebrities are real people... There’s certainly more pressure being in the spotlight with many people waiting for them to be seen as less than perfect. It is my job not to judge them and offer a service that empowers them to look and feel their best!

[RELATED: The secret to naturally younger looking skin]

You’re often the celebrity’s last contact before they go on stage; do you believe that you impact the star’s confidence?

GB: I believe that beautiful skin and makeup provides [my clients] with the confidence to be the character they need to play on stage.

Something I remember that Anthony McMahon, CEO and Founder of Intraceuticals always says is;

"It doesn't matter whether you’re the most famous star in the world or a mom taking her child to school, it's really about the last look in the mirror that gives you the confidence to be who you need to be."

With over 25 years of experience as an internationally acclaimed makeup artist, what is your secret to success?

GB: My secret to success is being open to learning and recognising the endless possibilities that the beauty industry has to offer.

I truly believe that success in any field is the interconnection between luck and being prepared when the opportunity presents itself.

[RELATED: Renowned makeup artist Carol Mackie talks top beauty trends]

What has been the most memorable moment of your career to date?

GB: The highlight of my career was developing diamond lashes with Mr. Shu Uemura, which became the most expensive lashes in the world. Shu Uemura was the very first makeup I purchased when starting out as a makeup artist [and] having the opportunity to represent the brand as the artistic director was an unforgettable experience.

Do you have anything exciting coming up after the tour?

GB: There are a lot of exciting projects in the works. I have a book coming out, I’m developing a TV show and as always, continuing to create new and innovative products for my brands.

The secret to naturally younger looking skin

Miranda Kerr with beautiful youthful skin

There are numerous beauty treatments and cosmetic enhancements to make you look younger. But if you are after a natural treatment to looking your best for no cost at all, these are the lifestyle changes you should be making.

1. Sleep more

What happens:

A lack of sleep saps your glow; instantly aging you (think dull skin and puffy eyes). Fatigue causes cortisol, the stress hormone, to rise sharply which can break down the natural collagen in skin.. eek!

What to try:

No more scrolling through social media in bed for hours. Instead, go to bed at a reasonable time, read a book to tire you out and get those eight hours of sleep.

2. Invest in skincare

What happens:

Even in your twenties, it is important to follow a curated skin care routine to ensure you are looking after your face by repairing and protecting your skin. Using peels, potent serums and exfoliants can help boost your complexion from dull to radiant.

What to try:

Put together a skincare routine suited to your skin type. You will need a complete routine form a cleanser, to an exfoliant, to serums and moisturisers. Here's a list of products to kick start your routine.

Alpha-H, Triple Action Cleanser $57.00

Alpha-H, Liquid Gold Rejuvenating Cream $127.00

Luzern, Micro Exfoliant $74.00

Dr Jart, Radiance Beauty Balm $63.00

3. Meditation

What happens:

Regularly practicing meditation can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and subside depression and anxiety. Stress and hormonal imbalance is a big factor in what your skin looks like, therefore a calmer mind will result in radiant skin.

What to try:

Take a few minutes out of your day to clear your mind and focus on your breathing, letting go of all negative energy.

4. Shape your brows

What happens:

Fuller brows that are well shaped to suit your facial features can take years off the face and enhance your bone structure.

What to try:

Grow out your brows to a point where they are thick enough to be threaded, waxed or plucked professionally to create a shape to match your face. When doing your makeup in the morning, don’t forget about your brows; use a brow pencil to fill in any sparse areas.

5. Diet

What happens:

What you put in your mouth plays a significant role in your skin’s appearance.

What to try:

Numerous foods have been proven to prevent aging, here are a few we have compiled...

Pomegranates - bursting with antioxidants, like Vitamin C, that prevent fine lines, wrinkles and dryness by neutralising the free radicals that weather skin.

Blueberries - much like the antioxidants found in pomegranates, blueberries also contain Vitamin C and E that work in tandem to brighten skin and even out skin tone.

Kale - contains iron which can prevent tiredness and encourage radiant skin.

Avocado - high in healthy fats that help the skin retain moisture in the outer lay to keep it soft, plump and supple

Water- staying hydrated promotes skin circulation.

6. Exercise

What happens:

Moderate amounts of exercise can shave years off your ‘skin’ age. Exercising encourages blood-flow to the skin giving it a healthy, youth-enhancing glow. By exercising regularly you are also slimming down, toning up, improving your posture and keeping your youthful glow!

What to try:

Grab your headphones and play your favourite feel good tunes as you briskly walk or jog around the block.. Even if it's for 15 minutes a day! Get that blood pumping girl.

7. More than just a pretty face

What happens:

When looking for anti-aging solutions - whether it be beauty related or not - often people forget that the skin on your neck is the exact same as the skin on your face! Only it doesn't get as much TLC.

What to try:

Take your facial serums, moisturisers and SPF, and apply it to your décolletage and neck in an upward sweep motion to prevent wrinkles on your neck and repair and protect the skin.

An interview with Barre Brisbane creator Ash Daniec

Ballerina from Barre Brisbane poses

We all know A-list models and celebs love their Barre classes, some of your favourite Victoria Secret Angels even credit the workout for their bombshell bodies! The workout - which is a fusion of yoga, Pilates and ballet conditioning exercises – is becoming more popular in Brisbane, with the West End Studio of Barre Brisbane opening in March.

We chatted with Barre Brisbane Director Ash Daniec to find out exactly why this exercise is so popular.

What does a Barre Brisbane class involve?

AD: Barre Brisbane classes use a combination of postures inspired by ballet and other disciplines like yoga and pilates. The barre is used as a prop to balance while doing exercises that focus on isometric strength training (holding your body still while you contract a specific set of muscles) combined with high reps of small range-of-motion movements.

Don’t be surprised if your class incorporates light weights to ‘bring the burn’ during all those reps, as well as mats for targeted core work.

What motivated you to open up a barre studio in Brisbane?

AD: My partner travels a lot for work and I had been lucky enough to travel with him to places like New York, LA, Sydney and Melbourne. Whilst he was working during the day I had a lot of free time and I stumbled across barre.

I fell head over heels for this workout, I could relive my childhood dream of being a ballet dancer (well pretend to be anyway) and I was shocked when I struggled to find a barre studio in Brisbane. One thing led to another and BOOM Barre Brisbane was created.

What are some of the benefits of this workout and how quickly can our readers expect to see results?

AD: Barre can visibly transform your body [by] sculpting and strengthening your muscles and targeting troubled spots with a fun approach to toning your arms, stomach, hips, thighs and butt. I recommend attending 4-5 classes a week and you should start to see a change in your body within a fortnight.

What type of music do you play during a barre class?

AD: Our classes are very music based. Ideally at the start of the class the music should motivate and empower you to feel stronger and work harder. We play songs that are “charting now” and have a high bpm. During the end of the class we usually listen to an old school/ classic/ acoustic cover to wind down into our relaxation.

Barre Brisbane stretching

How does the aesthetic of the space influence mindfulness during classes?

AD: The aesthetic is very important to me as I feel it’s a place people come to let go and relax. White walls, timber flooring and white linen curtains create a blank canvas for the mind to reboot. We don’t have mirrors in the studio as we really are trying to encourage the mind body connection.

Can you tell us about the various types of classes offered at Barre Brisbane?

AD: Barre Classic is predominately at the barre finished with some floor work on a mat. This class is great for beginners through to intermediate.

Barre Stretch is great to do after a Barre Classic class or great for runners or athletes. I discuss with the class if they have any concerns or tight areas. The class has a barre warm up, 6 stretches holding for 5 mins in each stretch and a relaxation. The lights a dimmed and we play really relaxing music.

Barre Cardio is very upbeat a lot more leg work at a faster pace, which is really good if you want to get your heart rate pumping.

Barre Endurance is perfect for toning and core strengthening. We use weights and resistance – increasing the intensity of eachposition.

Do you think barre is the new fitness trend for 2016?

AD: Barre has actually been around for quite a number of years – I do think there is a bit of hype in Brisbane at the moment as various studios are opening up but it has been around for quite some time.

What advice do you have for our readers who might be nervous about trying barre for the first time?

AD: We don’t take ourselves too seriously at Barre Brisbane. If you want to exercise and have a fun time doing it, our barre community if perfect for you.

Following the West End studio opening, do you have any exciting plans for the year ahead?

AD: Yes, hopefully by the end of the year we would like to start Barre Brisbane Retreats to places like Byron, Sunshine Coast and overseas places like Bali, Thailand and NZ.

Recreate Sibling London's wild and undone hair look

TONI&GUY have seriously dominated London Fashion Week with their unique hair styles! Partnering up with Sibling London for their AW16 collection, TONI&GUY created the perfect hair do to match the cool, bad girl vibes the show seemed to rock.

The hair look was perfectly twisted up into a neat spiral cone with a couple of loose ringlets which means it's super easy to recreate! The models demonstrated a rebellious attitude of an 'up all night look'. In other words, are you ready to look.. edgy and undone with a whole lot of attitude?

Apply TONI&GUY Volume Plumping Mousse through the lengths and ends of towel-dried hair before blow drying to create texture and grip for styling.

Leaving two lower sections of the hair loose either side of the head, twist the rest of the hair towards the crown in a French pleat and secure with pins. Leave the ends of the hair draped across the top of the head to create a fringe.

Using the loose lengths of hair, cover the French pleat by wrapping hair across the back of the head, leaving out one small section of hair near the nape of the head.

With the loose section, create small ringlets using the TONI&GUY Style Fix Curler, as well as curling two small sections within the fringe.

Tease hair with TONI&GUY Creative Style Spray Wax to add texture and definition.

Finally, spray TONI&GUY Creative Extreme Hold Hairspray to add further texture and to ensure hair stays in place.

The key to this look is tightening the French pleat, as this will create a shorter fringe and enable you to easily style the fringe to sit around your face. Ensure you spritz TONI&GUY Creative Style Spray Wax through hair lengths for the appearance of a slept-in look'.

Vivienne Westwood's Red Label AW16 hair how to

Vivienne Westwood's Red Label AW16 hair

Here at Fashion Weekly we understand the that your hair do can perfectly complete an outfit.

TONI & GUY's Lead Stylist and Global Ambassador, Mark Hampton, partnered up with Vivienne Westwood for her Red Label AW16 show to encapsulate the look of 'The Joker'- a strong presence in medieval and Renaissance history, which was embodied through the entire collection in print, tartans and knitwear.

The hair look for the collection drew inspiration from angels that had fallen from heaven and landed on Vivienne Westwood's Red Label runway for AW16 to create a formation of intellectuals.

So without further ado you can get this hair look in 4 easy steps:

Vivienne Westwood's Red Label AW16 hair

Apply TONI&GUY Prep Volume Plumping Mousse to damp hair to create body and grip for styling. Blow-dry thoroughly.

Once hair is dry, take a section of hair from the crown and twist, flattening to the head using pins. Spritz TONI&GUY Glamour 3D Volumiser from root to tip to give curls an added shine.

Vivienne Westwood's Red Label AW16 hair

Divide the rest of the hair into sections and tong using the TONI&GUY Style Fix Curler. Roll sections up and pin to the head, securing with a sectioning clip. Repeat all over until the full head of hair is curled.

Vivienne Westwood's Red Label AW16 hair

Once hair has cooled, remove sectioning clips one by one and allow the hair to fall free. Wrap each section around your finger, creating tight baby curls and re-pin intermittently. Ensure the ends of the hair are loose to create a textured layer of curls.

Vivienne Westwood's Red Label AW16 hair

After pinning, slightly tease the hair to create more volume for a baby kiss-curl look. Fix with TONI&GUY Firm Hair Spray to ensure curls stay in place.

To create this look quickly, take a section of hair from the back of the crown, twisting and flattening it against the head before pinning in place. This reduces the amount of hair you need to curl as you can cover over it.

A complete guide to dermal fillers and lip injections

Girl pouting to show lip fillers

In the world of beauty, it seems you don't have to be older to be wiser!

Dermal fillers can create natural plump and smooth skin to give you a fresh appearance regardless of your age. We quizzed the experts at Australian Skin Clinics on what you really need to know about dermal fillers.

What are dermal fillers and what does it involve?

ASC: Dermal fillers are a facial treatment that adds volume to an area on your face. A gel based treatment - based on a substance that occurs naturally in your body - is injected into your skin using a very fine needle.

How do dermal fillers differ to traditional anti-wrinkle treatments?

ASC: Anti-wrinkle injections block the chemical signal that the brain sends to your muscle telling the muscle to contract. This means when the brain says ‘squint, it’s sunny’, the muscles are saying ‘I can’t hear you’. The best thing about dermal filler is that they do not affect facial expressions, they are fast treatments - typically 30 minutes - and they also provide instant results.

How long do dermal fillers last?

ASC: Depending on your metabolism, the thickness of the product and a number of personal factors, dermal fillers can last for around six to twelve months.

Lip fillers on model

Which areas of the face do dermal fillers target?

ASC: The most popular area for dermal fillers are lips; as it helps to restore your shape and banish bleeding lip lines. Dermal fillers can also restore volume in your cheeks, under the eyes, and the laugh lines around your mouth.

Is twenty too young an age to be getting dermal fillers?

ASC: Dermal fillers are safe for younger woman too as it is made from a substance natural occurring in the body. One of the most popular dermal filler treatments amongst young people is lip enhancement as it can instantly create a full, sexy pout.

How can dermal fillers compliment the skin of a woman in her twenties?

ASC: Dermal fillers can help enhance a youthful look by restoring volume in the cheeks, lips and other areas if needed. It can also help encourage a young woman’s collagen to renew and help her skin stay revitalized because it retains water and helps with skin hydration.

What does a typical procedure involve?

ASC: A consultation is conducted prior to any treatment. It is also advised you should avoid blood-thinning medications such as Aspirin and Nurofen, as well as alcohol, for four days prior to your treatment in order to maximise your results and minimise any risk of bruising.

Vitamin and herb supplements should be skipped the week beforehand as many can often thin your blood too. One of the best things about dermal filler treatments is that they do not affect facial expression, they are fast (typically a 30 minute procedure) and they also provide instant results. During treatment, the dermal filler is injected into the skin in small amounts using a very fine needle.

The ultimate guide to fake tanning for a bronze glow

Written by Jessica Lunan

Tanned model gets out of pool

We all love bronzed skin. It can make you feel healthier, more confident, and reportedly can make you look slimmer. However as we farewell summer, many of us say goodbye to our tanned skin. But fear not; this guide will ensure you have an immaculate, bronzed glow all year round.

1. The golden, or bronzed, rule to a streak-free tan is exfoliating. The Hot Sugar Scrub is the perfect exfoliator pre-tan. The scrubs thermal zeolite’s warms the skin while exfoliation which helps to open pores for a deeper scrub.

Sanctuary Spa, Hot Sugar Scrub

Sanctuary Spa, Hot Sugar Scrub, $19.95.

2. After exfoliating, hydrate your body with a rich moisturiser, such as the Ultra Hydrating Body Cream by Trilogy. The formula will leave your skin super smooth and incredibly hydrated to ensure there are no dry patches for the fake tan to stick to.

Trilogy, Ultra Hydrating Body Cream

Trilogy, Ultra Hydrating Body Cream, $25.95.

Tanning Tip: It is important not to use any beauty products that will leave a residue on your skin right before tanning.

3. Begin applying the fake tan in sections. A general rule is to use 3 pumps of tan per limb, and then adjust the amount if you need to as you go. The Bondi Sands Self Tanning Foam is fuss free and dries quickly. Plus the Aloe Vera and coconut fragrance smells just like summer!

4. The fake tan’s success all lies in how the tan is applied. For an even, streak free tan ensure you use the Bondi Sands self-tanning mitt to achieve an even bronze, and lessen your chances of staining your hands. The thought of fake tanning can be a scary, however the Bondi Sands Back Applicator will ensure you have an effortless tan every time, and also means you avoid doing interesting yoga positions to achieve an immaculate result.

Bondi Sands, Application Mitt

Bondi Sands, Back Applicator Bondi Sands, Back Applicator, $14.95.
Tanning Tip: If you’re planning on sleeping in your fake tan, apply baby powder on top of the tan to ensure that your sheets don’t get stained.

5. To maintain your fauxe glow, make sure to moisturise daily. For a long-lasting tan try the Bondi Sands Liquid Everyday Gradual Tanning Milk. The formula hydrates the skin while creating an extra glow.

Furry nails craziest and hairiest trend of the moment!

Girl poses with new brown furry nails

If you think you've seen it all when it comes to nail art... then think again! The new latest eh.. trend in nail art has us all scratching our heads here at Fashion Weekly. Are you ready? Welcome to 2016 where furry nails has everyone going crazy.

Jan Arnold, Style Director and Co-Founder of CND nail polish, sent her models down the runway at Libertine's Fall/Winter 2016 rocking faux fur on their nails.

Now we aren't just talking a smidgen of fur - we are talking.. full, furry nails!

I know, how is this even considered practical? Could you wash your hands? Apply your own make-up? HOW WOULD YOU EAT?

This new trend certainly throws practicality out of the window and better yet down the drain and is a little more.. aspirational shall we say? But in a world that creates bubble nails and aquarium nails, the faux fur nail trend will certainly make a controversial appearance on social media.

While the results are bizarre and the logic behind it is well.. non-existent, you can't help but take your hat off to Jan Arnold for a new “talk of the town” trend (that's if you could do anything with those nails).

One can only wonder what is next..

5 Ways to avoid that dreaded afternoon brain drain at work

Pretty girl poses with laptop at work

Picture this; you arrive at work in the morning brimming with energy after a coffee-hit however that feeling slowly diminishes as the day progresses and the deadlines loom. Your productivity drops to an all-time low and you struggle to focus on any task at hand.

Does this sound like you?

The truth is, you’re not just physically tired but your brain is exhausted. Luckily avoiding that slump is easier than you think. Dr Jenny Brockis, medical practitioner and author of Future Brain, unveils her top five tips on how to avoid the brain drain so that you’re always on your A game.

What we choose to eat has a direct impact on our brain health. Bottom line is - stick to ‘real foods’ and minimise processed foods. It may be tempting to order fast food for dinner or snack on a donut in the afternoon, but fast or sugary foods has been associated with reduced verbal memory and lower mood which stops us from performing our best.

Opt for nutrient dense food choices like leafy greens and oily fish instead, and healthy snacks like berries, dark chocolate (minimum 70%) and chopped nuts.

While we may worry that taking breaks will invite judgement from our colleagues on our productivity, regular brain breaks will actually keep our concentration and focus on point. Our brain is designed to pay focused attention in relatively short chunks of time, between 60-90 minutes. Prioritise your work into focused blocks, separated by regular 10-15-minute brain breaks. You’ll be able to get more done, to a higher level and with fewer mistakes.

Sitting has been labelled as the new smoking. When you sit at your desk for prolonged periods, you are denying your brain the oxygen and nutrients it needs to think well, resulting in loss of focus and concentration.

Get up and move every hour for a couple of minutes. Try a standing desk if your work permits or call a standing (or walking) meeting. Also take your phone calls standing up. It’s also ideal to fit in 30 minutes of exercise before work every day to prime your brain for best performance.

Being busy means finding the time to think can be a challenge. Our thinking space is that quiet reflective place when we check in that we’re on the right track, that things are going as expected and what else we need to prioritise or do.

Where you find this space doesn’t matter, it could be in the park, while listening to some music, meditating or exercising. Schedule in 15 minutes a day in your diary, that’s enough to set you up to be ready to do your best work.

Always sleep deprived and feeling chronically tired? Having a decent amount of shuteye every night is the ultimate energy booster you need.

Seven to eight hours of quality, uninterrupted sleep is best for cognition and is the perfect time for you to take out the brain’s trash and regulate emotion.

When we don’t get enough sleep, we feel immensely tired the next day. This then makes us cranky and can inhibit our ability to manage stress and make good decisions.

Dr. Jenny Brockis is a medical practitioner, speaker and author who specialises in brain health and the science of high performance thinking. Her new book Future Brain: The 12 Keys To Create A High Performance Brain is now available online and at all good bookstores including Dymocks.

Your complete Valentine's Day 2016 beauty checklist

Women hugs man with red nails and lips for Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day 2016 is just around the corner and, if you’re anything like us, you’ve left it to the last minute to prepare! Looking and feeling fabulous on a date is all about the preparation, so we turned to the experts at Australian Skin Clinics to create the ultimate beauty checklist for Valentine’s Day 2016. Ready, set, glow!

Glowing complexion – check!

Maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s a microdermabrasion! For skin that glows this Valentine’s Day, look no further than a microdermabrasion treatment. Not only will it treat bad breakouts, it can also treat sun damage, dry skin, blemish scars and fine lines. Australian Skin Clinics offers a gold standard 9-step microdermabrasion which includes cleanse, exfoliation, AHA/BHA mask, microdermabrasion, extractions, peel (after careful assessment of suitability), nourishment, hydration and protection.

The 45-minute treatment removes the dead outer surface of your skin with light abrasion, unclogging your pores and leaving your skin clear and renewed. It will also improve your skin’s circulation and stimulate its collagen simultaneously.

[RELATED: Kiss proof your makeup for unlimited smooching]

Kissable lips – check!

Have the plump pout you’ve always dreamed of this Valentine’s Day 2016 with dermal fillers. Dermal fillers can restore and boost volume in naturally thin lips for up to six months, depending on your metabolism and other factors. Results are instant, however it is strongly recommended that you book this treatment five to seven days before your hot Valentine’s date.

Hair free – check!

Remember that time someone rubbed your leg and you realised you forgot to shave? Guilty! Fear no more ladies - laser hair removal treatments can be tailored to eradicate hair from nearly all areas of your face and body fast.

[RELATED: The ultimate single girl's guide to Valentine’s Day 2016]

Whether you want no hair down there, smooth underarms or silky smooth legs, you can be hair free in less than 10 minutes depending on your treatment area! Australian Skin Clinics use only medical-grade laser hair removal equipment by fully trained technicians and any hair colour can be targeted, except for grey, white and white blonde.

Smooth skin – check!

Ensure your skin is silky smooth this Valentine’s Day by using Skinstitut 14% Glycolic Scrub. Apply the scrub to dry skin, and leave for ten minutes before washing off. The Glycolic breaks down the glue that holds dead skin cells together making them fall away easily, revealing softer, smoother skin. Lastly, apply a body cream immediately after your shower to help lock in the moisture on date night!

No matter what your beauty needs, the team at Australian Skin Clinics have a suitable treatment to ensure you stun on Valentine’s Day 2016.

Kiss proof your makeup for unlimited smooching

The notebook kiss

It’s the month of love! Whether you are taken or single, most of us can expect to do a bit of smooching! This doesn’t mean your beauty look should suffer. How many times have you given up that sexy red lip to avoid a makeup-mishap 'just in case' you do end the night with a kiss ... or two?

Follow these tried-and-tested tips and tricks for kiss proof lips that will stay all night so that you can seduce him with a colourful pout!

Lipstick should have layers

Layering is the key to making a lip product last! Line and fill your lips with a lip liner, then apply your first coat of lipstick. Blot your lips on a tissue a few times and leave your lips to air for a second before applying another coat on top.

A matte formula does the trick

Lipstick with a matte formula will last longer than a glossy or creamy type as it sticks to your lips rather than just sit on top of them. You can mattify any of your lipsticks by taking a thin layer of a tissue and placing it over your mouth then dusting your lips with a fluffy makeup brush and a translucent setting powder.

Liquid lipsticks last

Liquid lipstick is a long-lasting bright lip saviour, it contains the pigment of a lipstick but applies like a gloss and feels comfortable on the lips. Liquid lipsticks provide an opaque and vivid colour but the formula can be slightly drying and often hard to remove.

Lip liner, stick and gloss

1. Tarte, Amazonian Clay Universal Lip Liner $26.00

2. Tom Ford, Lip Color Matte $75.00

3. Kat Von D, Everlasting Liquid Lipstick $30.00

These products and tips will ensure you never have to endure a smeared lipstick mishap again!

Barbie finally says goodbye to unrealistic standards

New Barbie dolls

Growing up, we all had to adhere to social standards and the perceptions of others. Always wanting something you didn't have, wishing you looked a certain way...

I remember the day I received my first Barbie doll, handed down to me by my cousin. It was a dream come true, well for a 5 year old me at least.

The Barbie I remember had never ending long legs, a petite cinched in waist, long luscious blonde locks and blue eyes. Not to mention that she wore very little.

Barbie set the norm when it came to looks and body shapes, what girl didn't at some point in her childhood wish to be as 'beautiful' as her new best friend, Barbie?

Are you nodding your head with me on this one? What an unrealistic standards we grew up with by aspiring to look like Barbie.

Not to mention the controversial stir caused by Mattel, Barbie's brand, last year when they cast a male in a Moschino Barbie campaign.

Without placing a complete sour note on things, Mattel has certainly found a positive way to kick off 2016! The company have announced the release of a whole new Barbie range featuring varying body shapes, skin tones, eye colours and hairstyles.

Ultimately giving not only Barbie herself one hell of a makeover, but the brand too!

Evelyn Mazzocco Global General Manager for Mattel stated, “We are excited to literally be changing the face of the brand - these new dolls represent a line that is more reflective of the world girls see around them”.

While the release of the new Barbie's will cause a stir in society, it's definitely a healthier promotion of body image for our youth!

A simple & cheap guide to cleaning makeup brushes

Makeup Brush

Honestly, how often do you wash your makeup brushes?

Our brushes and sponges come into contact with our skin and beauty products daily, and although you might not be aware of it, there are bacteria growing on them.

You probably know by now that makeup brushes should be an investment. There is no point spending hundreds of dollars on expensive beauty products but not having the proper tools to apply it.

It is equally as important to frequently sanitise and wash your brushes. This will not only prolong the life of your brushes but also help avoid breakouts on your skin.

Washing your makeup brushes does not have to be a time-consuming and expensive task. It can be really simple and inexpensive.

How to clean a Makeup Brush

What you need:

- Dirty makeup brushes

- Access to a sink

- Johnson’s Baby Shampoo

- Towel

Step 1:

Fill the sink halfway with luke warm water. Dip the bristles of your brushes into the water to remove the first layer of product.

Step 2:

Line your brushes on the edge of the sink. Dispense some Johnson’s Baby Shampoo into the palm of your hand and swirl the bristles of your brush in the shampoo using circular motions.

Step 3:

Rinse the bristles under a running tap until the water comes out clear (if the water is still coloured go ahead and repeat step 2). Keep your brushes facing down and ensure only the bristles are getting wet. This will prevent any liquid from coming into contact the the glue and keep your brushes from shedding.

Step 4:

Gently squeeze the excess water out of the bristles. Roll a towel and place your brushes balancing at a downward facing angle to dry.

How often should I wash my brushes?

Ideally, your brushes should be washed weekly however, as long as you don't have an infection or severe breakout on your face, you can get away with washing your brushes once or twice a month. To keep your tools sanitised in between washes you can use a brush cleansing spray and a tissue to spot clean.

Why a relationship is not the answer to finding happiness

I have a confession... I am shamefully addicted to the US Bachelor. One contestant in particular caught my attention from the first rose ceremony.

This girl constantly made negative remarks about the other women and frequently acted in a way she later regretted. It was clear that she had issues that she needed to sort out with herself before she could find any sort of stability in a relationship, and that had me thinking about our constant need of reassurance in others.

I have watched many women in my life jump from one relationship to the other. Always trying to find happiness - and the confidence they lack in themselves - through another man, only for it to fall apart time and time again.

Ladies, it’s time to face the truth; you HAVE to love yourself unconditionally before you can try to make it work with a significant other. The happiness you are searching for is within you.

4 Ways to love yourself and find your happiness

1. Accept your flaws and downfalls but focus on improvement

Perfection is an illusion, not even your favourite celebrities are perfect. Don’t strive to be what society has defined, accept who you are, flaws and all, but focus on your strengths. Accept your failures as teaching moments, guiding you to be the best version of yourself.

2. Push yourself outside of your comfort zone

This one is much harder said than done. It is easy to get caught up in your routine and stick what you know but you only grow when you are challenged.

3. Don’t be closed minded on new adventures and new possibilities

Change is scary to even the most confident of people. But life has a way of placing you where you need to be, so open yourself up to new possibilities. Take up a group sport or hobby that you have been curious about or go out with your friends from work that have been asking you every Friday. This will not only help boost your confidence but you will learn more about yourself.

4. Don’t keep the past in the past

Until you learn to forgive yourself for your mistakes and forgive others who have hurt you, you will continue to dwell on your past. By letting go of resentment and past anger you will be able to focus on what lies ahead instead.

Instagrammer Anna Victoria exposes #fitsporation

Fit girl takes mirror selfie

I don't know about you, but when I hear the term fitsporation I immediately think of thigh gaps, acai bowls, flat abs and green smoothies. But maybe that's just me?

With the popularity of Instagram rapidly increasing in our society the more #fitsporation content such as selfies of fitspo models in bikinis with taut tummies, toned arms and not to mention kitted out in the latest exercise gear can often be a little overwhelming for followers.

But are these posts from fitspo go'ers truly promoting a healthy message to their followers or are they merely having a negative influence on viewers, making them feel insecure about their own personal appearance?

Instagrammer Anna Victoria and founder of Fit Body Guide, recently took to her instagram posting an image some have deemed controversial and different from her usual fitspo content. Anna demonstrated how even those who are extremely well regarded within the fitsporation family aren't perfect.

A photo posted by Anna Victoria (@annavictoria) on

Her latest post has left us here at Fashion Weekly feeling empowered after her explanations behind the post summarises the real meaning of fitsporation over the commercial “perfect bod” pics. In a nutshell, Anna summarised how even the most toned of people still have skin that folds over on their stomachs when they sit down and that having this is nothing to be ashamed of! I know right? A real life fitspo model admits to having what she deems to be a flaw with her “already” perfect body? Thus proving that no one is perfect and that minor “imperfections” should be embraced rather than edited out!

Thank you Anna Victoria for being bold enough to own it!

11 Beauty do’s and don’ts to keep in mind for a first date

Girl putting on mascara

DON’T try a new beauty treatment

This is not the time to be adventurous with your skincare routine.

DO ensure you have well-manicured nails

No chipped nail polish allowed.

Rihanna with fresh nails

DON’T try a new perfume

You never know whether you might develop an allergic reaction to a new perfume or how the scent will change on your skin.

DO use whitening toothpaste

So you feel confident flashing those pearly whites.

DON’T try a new hairstyle

Keep your hairstyle simple and rock a style you feel confident and sexy with. For a chic yet sexy look try casual curls or a bouncy blow-dry.. and do practice that fierce hair flick in the mirror!

Beyonce dancing and flicking her hair

DON’T slick on too much lip-gloss or a bright lipstick

Whether you get a surprise goodnight kiss or a lipstick slip while you’re eating, sticking to less bold lipstick colours will prevent any disasters and save you from worrying all night.

DO fake tan at least a day or two before the date

For streak free glowing skin make sure you shave, exfoliate and moisturise your skin thoroughly a day before tanning.

DON’T squeeze that spot

Nothing good ever comes from picking at your skin. Instead use a spot treatment with salicylic acid to reduce blemishes.

Lips kissing

DO wear a nude lip or lip stain

Add some colour and shine to your lips with a no fuss formula and colour.

DON’T try microdermabrasion or peel treatments

... Because your face peeling off might scare him away.

DON’T get your brows waxed on the day

To ensure your face is not red and irritated avoid waxing right before your date.

Sephora to finally land in Queensland early this year

Sephora coming to QLD

Makeup giant Sephora needs little introduction, the name alone can have a woman’s heart beating a million miles an hour.

The French-born beauty mecca opened its introductory Australian store in 2014 in Sydney’s Pitt Street Mall, followed by two store openings in Macquarie Centre last September and Melbourne in December 2015.

Last year Queenslanders finally gained access to what the makeup giant has to offer with the launch of its online store in Australia. However, many customers were left disappointed as Sephora’s full offering of brands is not available on the website.

Now the word is out that Sephora is finally opening a bricks-and-mortar store in Queensland! Sephora have advertised career opportunities for their upcoming Gold Coast store on recruitment website Seek. We wonder if the LVMH owned store is following in clothing retailer Zara’s footsteps and plans to open in Robina Town Centre...

The Gold Coast store is allegedly set to open in mid-late April this year. The Courier Mail has further reported that Sephora's Brisbane store is in the works. While no location or date is confirmed, the store is rumoured to be in the CBD.

Amber Walker talks body image and how to achieve a sexy soul

Written by

Over dinner the night before New Year's Eve, a girlfriend of mine explained her fitspo plans for 2016. It was a difficult conversation for me to be apart of as I had to control myself not to blurt out exactly what I was thinking.

She often praised the athletically perfect models and aspired to create an aesthetic that resembled their ways.

But that's the problem with social media. It's an unrealistic platform that paints distorted and plastic versions of people's lives.

I recently had a chat with Personal Trainer and Holistic Nutritionist, Amber Walker about her views on the influence faking-it-fit really has on today's modern society.

"I've always been very fit and active," said Walker. "I was a bit of a science nerd, (she laughs) I've always loved health and fitness and as I've grown up I noticed the importance of it," said Walker.

Though she has chosen a life that focuses on physical, emotional and mental wellbeing, the journey has come with its challenges.

"In my late teens and and early twenties I suffered from severe depression. I'd lost a couple of friends early on in life."

By the the time she was 22, Walker had been hopsitalised four times. Deemed beyond help by many medical experts, she used her Personal Trainer background and knowledge to seek out alternative ways to get through the days.

With a complete lifestyle overhaul that focused on nourishing foods and physical movement, Walker transformed her health and began to see a brighter future for herself, one of helping others.

"I discovered that I needed to look after myself in all facets, not just nutrition and exercise.

"You need to take time to find what makes your soul happy. We live in a society where that is not encouraged. We're encouraged to do other things that are materialistic and measurable. Sometimes it's about giving yourself 10 minutes where you can just think."

With her knowledge and dedication to positively influencing our society, Walker has created an online wellness program called 60 Days To A Sexy Soul.

When asked about the inspiration behind the name she said, "I wanted to combine wellness as something that is desirable. Who doesn't want a sexy soul?"

Amber Walker takes a complete holistic approach to her coaching, looking at a persons health and wellness from the combined physical, mental, emotional and spiritual view so as to treat the whole person.

"I don't tell my clients what to do. It's all about educating them about what they should be doing ... I'm empowering them."

Sadly, many young women are being negatively impacted as our society puts aspirations on being visually pleasing rather than praising or celebrating one's talents, personality and internal beauty.

"There are some great fitspo accounts out there but there are also more accounts out there who have the right lighting and the right angle. They take the photo, go away and then ... get those hideous apps that can enhance features and not just put a filter on it.

"You can make your boobs and butt bigger and make your tummy smaller and do all that sort of stuff and then they post them. They are unrealistic. These [images] are about looking fit but not feeling fit."

In a world where we are obsessed with double tapping the latest superfoods, colourful smoothies and yoga poses in our feeds, maybe it's time to find another form of inspiration?

“Only when you start looking at your health from a holistic 360 degree view, understanding how all these elements are intertwined, will you begin to see and feel really dramatic life changing results.”

The 10 commandments of dating a beauty junkie

Girl puts on lipstick while being kissed by guy

1. Never question why we need “another pink lipstick”.

Unless you want to hear all about the various undertones in lipstick colours and the difference between a matte, cream or liquid formula... Yeah we didn't think so.

2. Accept that all travel plans will include multiple stops at stores like Sephora, Ulta or French pharmacies.

No all makeup is not the same, no we can’t get this back home.

3. We won’t give in, so just join our pamper nights.

Whether we want to share our face masks with you or pluck your eyebrows, you will eventually submit to being well groomed (and you'll be better for it!).

Model with face mask

4. Travelling with hand luggage only is out of the question!

Most countries have restrictions on the amount of liquids you can carry onto the plane, and there is no way we are going to risk losing our stash at the security gates.

5. Buying a product just because our favourite YouTuber recommended it is totally acceptable.

If Jaclyn (yes, we are on first name terms) says we need it then we totally do!

6. Similarly, buying a product solely because of its pretty or unique packaging is a necessity.

We’re building a collection here okay...

Beauty products

7. Never comment about our skincare routine being excessive.

If you do, we will lecture you about the importance of double cleansing, exfoliating, serums, oils and the many more steps.

8. Makeup is an art, and we’d appreciate it if you appreciate it!

Want to make us weak at the knees? Just comment on how even our winged liner is!

9. We can easily spend a whole Sunday holed up in bed watching YouTube tutorials and reading beauty blogs.

Don’t judge our browser history!

10. If we ever move in together, you are taking on our beauty collection too.

Just like you don’t want to part with that weird soccer poster, there is no way we are reducing our beauty stash, and we will require a beauty room.

Flaunt a flawless mani and pedi this summer with Scholl

Booking weekly manicures at a beauty salon sounds like a great idea, but let’s get real – no one has the time for that! I don't have the patience to file my nails with an emery board and clipping the nail causes it to split, so I've always had to embrace short nails. Which is why I was beyond excited when the Scholl Velvet Smooth Electronic Nail Care System landed on my desk.

The Scholl Velvet Smooth Electronic Nail Care System is one device that electronically files, buffs and polishes the nails – why has no one thought of this sooner?

The device is unique to the at-home market; an electronic beauty tool which comes with three detachable nail care heads to:

  • File: Used to shorten your nails or create a desired nail shape.
  • Buff: Used to even out irregularities and create a smooth surface on the nail bed.
  • Polish: Used to create a natural shine on the nail bed.

The three step routine of the Scholl Velvet Smooth Electronic Nail Care System works together to create a flawless base for your nail colour or allows you to embrace the natural nail trend. The heads can be easily fitted onto the device and operated at two speeds to evenly file, buff and polish your nails into a manicure or pedicure that you’ll want to flaunt this summer.

However, using the device does require patience and is not a speedy process. While this device is more convenient than booking an appointment at your beautician, taking your time and using the lowest speed will provide the best results.

The device (with one set of heads) retails for $59.99 while the refill heads are available for $19.99 a set. The only negative comment I have about this device is the cost of the refills and how often they need to be replaced. I have been using the nail care system frequently for the past two months and I have had to replace the heads twice. If you want to use the device frequently, I would recommend having a set of heads for your manicure and a separate set to use for your pedicure.

The Scholl Velvet Smooth Electronic Nail Care System is an essential for your at-home beauty routine to ensure you boast a flawless pedicure and manicure all summer long!

The Scholl Velvet Smooth Electronic Nail Care System is now available in all good pharmacies and supermarkets.

Are flawless selfies portraying the right message?

With iPhone and Android cameras improving every day, it’s clear that selfies are here to stay. To help us get the best out of our devices, there are literally hundreds of selfie apps to aid in:

• Taking selfies
• Editing selfies
• Sharing selfies

In the selfie-driven world of celebrities , the ultimate app is one that you can use to tweak portraits of your face so the images you upload are flawless. Costhetics, Australia’s premiere online resource for information about cosmetic surgery and aesthetic enhancement, recently took a snapshot of what’s happening online in Hollywood.

The App Kim Kardashian Uses to Look Selfie-Perfect from Every Angle

“If Kim Kardashian is using it, everyone wants it,” reports Louisa McKay, the managing director at Costhetics. “Perfect365 is a perfect example.”

"Kim and all the Kardashians use the app Perfect365 to touch up their photos before they post them on social media. (They) have gotten all of their friends into it." – Us Magazine

Touting over 60 million users, Perfect365 is loaded with nearly two dozen make-up tools. You can snap, refine, and then share your selfies, experimenting with the hottest styles and newest trends in tweaking:

• Obliterate skin imperfections
• Whiten teeth
• Sculpt brows
• Add lip gloss
• Add eyeliner
• Add glow to dry complexion

These on-the-spot makeover tricks provide instant enhancement. That’s essential when you’re a star like Kim Kardashian who has to work hard to feed her hungry social media machine. Kardashian has 27 million followers on Instagram alone and uploads new images hundreds of time each day. Each spontaneous image is carefully messaged before going live to her fans.

For users whose retouching skills are not as advanced as Kardashian’s, Perfect365 also has pre-set makeup templates that provide an instant makeover. You can save your customisations to make it even easier to re-touch selfies in the future.

Top 3 Portrait Editing iPhone Apps for 2015

Once upon a time, only professionals had the tools and skills to enhance pictures. Those days are so over! 21st Century photo-tweaking apps can turn anyone into a master retoucher who can give selfie portraits an instant digital makeover.

These apps are ideal for anyone who hasn’t yet mastered Photoshop or doesn’t want to invest in expensive photo-editing software. At the moment they are only available for iPhones.

• FaceTune – The #1 photo app in 127 countries and a favourite of folks with acne. It has great share options, linking you to top sites like Instagram, Facebook, and Tumblr. Cost: $2.99

• Pixtr – Like having your own personal retoucher, the app automatically detects what needs to be corrected. Special bonus: Pixtr links to Facebook and allows you to upload your re-touched photo directly from your app. Cost: FREE

• Photo Makeover – Turn that frown upside down and change other expressions with this app. You can also use it to make other adjustments to the face, including adding symmetry, just like a facelift! Cost: $0.99

3 Apps for Editing Selfies on an Android Phone

Take heart, Android fans. Though offering limited functionality compared to their iOS cousins, these apps are Android-friendly and FREE, too.

• Beauty Camera – Your new BFF if you have skin discolouration. This app smooths out skin tone and removes dark spots. It works with new photos and ones already stored on your camera.

• Visage Lab – The automatic retouching may not be as subtle as you’d like, but it’s great for removing wrinkles. It also offers email and direct upload options for easy sharing.

• Pimple Remover Photo Retouch – Simply highlight the areas where blemishes appear, and this app will give a beautiful complexion without laser skin resurfacing.

How to Raise Self(ie) Esteem

Selfies may come and go instantly on Snapchat, but elsewhere on the Internet they can live forever. What’s exciting about portrait-editing apps is that they allow you to create a great photograph that you’ll always enjoy seeing. It’s what magazine editors do every day.

There’s no reason to let an imperfection like a sunspot, a bad hair day, or an acne flare-up spoil an otherwise wonderful selfie. So grab one of the new apps and make yourself memorable. Then share your face with the world.
