10 beauty ‘cheats’ for the time-poor woman

These beauty cheat tips will change your life...

These beauty cheat tips will change your life...

Life's no easy walk in the park. With our never-ending lists, demanding careers, family commitments and the rest - it seems that most of the time we are running through life and forgetting to take any time to spoil ourselves. When things get chaotic the first thing to move down our priority list is our beauty regime.

There's no greater feeling of having your life together than when your skin is glowing, your nails are manicured and your hair is styled like a Victoria's Secret model. But time doesn't always permit and we're often left with chipped nail polish, pale skin and our hair thrown up in a messy bun.

But before summer creeps up on us, let's try and change some things to prevent the latter from haunting us. We spoke with the founder of Sydney’s newest spray tan salon Beach St, Lauren Capelin about beauty cheats for the time-poor woman and they're soooo good that we had to share it with you.

timepoorbeauty04Left to right: Lauren Capelin and Giuliana Benedet

1) “A manicure in your lunch break is an absolute luxury, and most would agree that it’s simply not realistic. An at home mani will suffice provided you’re equipped with high-quality polish and a steady hand. Avoid ruining all your hard work in a matter of seconds with this sneaky tip – dip each hand in a bowl of ice water for one minute each to dry nails and go about your day with full use of your hands!”

2) “Many people agree that the signature sign of health, beauty and confidence is glowing, sun-kissed skin. However, most would agree that they do not have the time to lounge about on the beach all day building up a healthy glow – not to mention the health risks involved! A spray tan is the quickest, safest way to feel like your best self. Some of our customers swear they look 10kgs lighter after a spray!”

3) “Dry shampoo – enough said! This god-send should be in every busy woman’s bathroom cabinet and work drawer.”

4) “You were born with hands for a reason – use them! If you’re in a hurry, put your brushes away and apply eyeshadow with your index finger, blush with two fingers (moving in a circular motion on the apples of your cheeks) and foundation with all four fingers. Most beauty-lovers are either for or against using fingers over brushes or beauty blenders. The big pro of applying foundation with the hands is that the heat from our skin melts the product and allows it to be applied smoothly and seamlessly.”

5) “A fabulous winged eye can be the bane of a woman’s existence, evidenced by the amount of memes online stating ‘Never ask a woman with winged eyeliner why she is late’. You’ll have no excuse for not being punctual if you use a small amount of sticky tape applied along the eye. It acts as a guide to ensure your liner is straight, even, and going in the right direction. You can be as messy as you want as the excess ink will fall on the tape.”

6) “The worst thing to realise before a hot date is that you’ve forgotten to shave your legs. Thank goodness for on-the-go shaving cream! You can simply apply the cream and shave in five minutes flat. Always avoid dry shaving, even in dire situations, because it can cause serious skin irritation.”

7) “Embrace the 2-in-1 or even 3-in-1 nature of some beauty products. Most nude eyeshadows with a shimmer make excellent highlighter and illuminator for cheekbones and cupid bows. Glossy pink or orange-toned lipsticks make for creamy, lasting blushes and a clean mascara brush works as a brow brush in a pinch!”

8) “My new favourite thing is micellar water. Some nights cleansing the face just seems like far too much effort and it’s easy to fall into the trap of sleeping with your make-up on which most people know is torture for the skin. Simply apply micellar water to a beauty pad and swipe over the face.”

9) “Limit salon visits by investing in a product such as the Beach St Body Conditioner. It extends the life of your spray tan or, if used daily, you can build a gradual glow.”

10) “If you know you have an event the following day (or you just feel like looking fabulous, no event necessary), sleep with your hair in braids for easy, wavy in the morning. For a less dramatic look, twist your hair into two Princess Leia-style buns and spray each with sea salt spray. This will result in a beachy effect and you can literally say you did just ‘wake up like this’.”

7 ways to beat body hate and love thy curves

Barre Body founder, Emma Seibold shares her wisdom on loving your body.

Barre Body founder, Emma Seibold shares her wisdom on loving your body.

Your body truly is a temple, in more ways than one. It is the beautiful vehicle you have been given to travel and enjoy life in, so it’s only natural that you should nurture, love and worship it.

After my second baby was born I was left with abdominal separation, a saggy tummy, two hernias and very painful knees. Having had such a healthy and active lifestyle throughout both my pregnancies and in between with Barre Body, it was a real shock to not feel strong or fit.

I understand how hard we can be on ourselves (us women especially), and it’s time to shift this thinking and begin embracing ourselves and our bodies. Here are my 7 tips to loving your body.

1. Move your body.

First and most importantly, move your body every single day. Even if it is just for 10 or 20 minutes, move your lovely body. Once you get started, you’ll want to keep going for longer and you’ll find you enjoy yourself (trust me, it’s true). Exercise releases feel good endorphins, so you’ll get an extra mood boost too.

2. Find a regular form of exercise you love.

It’s so much easier to have motivation when you find a style of exercise or a workout studio that you love. Of course I recommend you try Barre Body. It’s a body-loving, self-kindness environment that will support you to really enjoy working out. However, you need to find a different exercise that you truly love so I recommend you have a go at different routines until you find something that fits.

3. Eat it all with love.

My manifesto when it comes to eating (such an integral part of body love and acceptance) comes from my favourite nutrition book, Food Rules by Michael Pollan. A quote that’s stuck with me is, “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.”

Meaning, you should eat whole foods rather than processed foods, you should eat moderate portions and eat mindfully, and you should eat a primarily plant-based diet. I just love this. It’s so simple and so true. I also believe that you should eat with love – eat pizza or chocolate (not too much) and make it a self-loving experience without any guilt.

4. Be grateful.

Be grateful for this magical, beautiful, healthy body you have been given. Even on the days when my knees were at their worst, I was grateful that I could get out of bed and still move around. What a gift our precious body and state of health is. Try to shift your focus from what you don’t like into what you do. We spend so much time and negative energy on hating certain things about ourselves, but by becoming aware of this self-talk we can consciously stop it.

5. Let go of wanting to lose weight.

Just let go. The very energy of letting go is much more conducive to losing weight than a tightly held belief like “I have to lose weight.” We all know what we need to do to be healthy, but instead, we seem to become obsessed with counting calories. This is certainly not going to support your journey to wellness and loving your body. So let go of these beliefs and work on what makes you feel heathy.

6. Throw out any clothes that don't fit or flatter you.

It’s simple, buy new clothes that fit your body now, not the body you think you want or used to have.

7. Buy yourself a super cute workout outfit.

Because you deserve it, and it will give you the motivation to workout and show off your new active wear wardrobe.

The blonde spring summer 2016/17 hair trend report

Which blonde are you? Paul Mitchell reveals the season's hottest colour in this Fashion Weekly exclusive Spring Summer 2016/17 hair trend report.

Gwen Stafani Blonde from Paul Mitchell's blonde spring summer 2016 17 hair trend report

The new season, Spring Summer 2016/17 calls for the perfect time to lighten your locks, so we’ve pulled some of our favourite variations from the blonde spectrum to get you inspired for the warmer months ahead. Whether you love bold cool tones or subtle honey hues, these four variations will help you narrow down the right shade of blonde for you.

Gwen Stafani Blonde

Gwen Stafani Blonde from Paul Mitchell's blonde spring summer 2016 17 hair trend report

Vibrant statement blonde is right on trend for summer 2016/17 and who wears the look better than Gwen Stafani, the ultimate blonde bombshell.

Platinum Blonde is a head turning shade on any wearer when the colour is created perfectly. It takes time and of course, a trained professional to be able to create a fresh, clean and vibrant shade of platinum.

It can be worn by women of all ages, but be warned it takes a lot of commitment to maintain. Because the colour is created for a full head, roots begin to show quickly and regular trips to the stylist are needed to ensure the shade remains flawless.

Paul Mitchel Pro Tip: Once you’ve ventured to the lighter side, protect your investment and keep your lightened locks healthy and bright with Paul Mitchell Forever Blonde® products.

California Blonde

California Blonde from Paul Mitchell's blonde spring summer 2016 17 hair trend report

Sunny light locks like those seen on Kate Hudson are the epitome of the true California beach blonde. This pale gold shade is great for those with naturally lighter hair and is perfect for summer.

Paul Mitchel Pro Tip:

Just like platinum blonde this shade requires a generous amount of upkeep and regular salon visits, something to be mindful of before investing the time and money on this level of lightening.

  • A quick visit to the salon for a toner is a great way to freshen your locks between colour visits.
  • The use of professional blonde specific home care products is MUST.
  • Regular treatments such as Paul Mitchell Forever Blonde Dramatic Repair will help keep your hair in optimal condition throughout summer.
  • When your regrowth starts to show, braid your hair in various styles until your next salon appointment.

Beach Blonde

Beach blonde from Paul Mitchell's blonde spring summer 2016 17 hair trend report

Nothing says summer 2016/17 like blonde beach hair. Texture and natural movement is still a major trend but this summer, why not add in a few sun-kissed natural highlights to accentuate your beach babe hair.

Your stylist can help you achieve this look with a combination of highlight thicknesses and colour tones which will create variation to your overall colour.

If you are after natural look without as much upkeep, then this blonde shade is for you!

Paul Mitchel Pro Tip:

  • Invest in a high quality sea spray like Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger Texturizing Sea Spray to perfect your “just left the beach” windswept texturised hair .
  • Protect your hair colour during the hair with Paul Mitchell Color Protect Locking Spray.

Beyonce Bronde

Beyonce blonde from Paul Mitchell's blonde spring summer 2016 17 hair trend report

It's without question that Beyonce is one of our favourite IT girls! If we were to name just one reason why we love her, it would have to because she can wear nearly any hair colour! And she is fearless when it comes to experimenting with styles. Her perfect bronde hue is a gorgeous mixture of soft light browns with subtle blonde highlights and is a great blonde variation for those with naturally darker hair.

Paul Mitchel Pro Tip:

  • If you are naturally darker and wanting to lighten up your hair for summer, Bronde is a fantastic shade to opt for. But remember, lightening of any kind takes time, so consult your stylist to create an action plan to lighten your overall colour gradually to maintain your hair health.
  • Invest in a professional reparative shampoo, conditioner and treatment such as Paul Mitchell Ultimate Color Repair Shampoo, Rinse & Mask to extend the lift of your hair colour and repair the health of your hair between salon visits.

Thanks to our friends at Paul Mitchell for sharing this exclusive Spring Summer 2016/17 hair trend report with us.

The quick beauty pick me ups every vanity needs

Written by Jessica Lunan

Time. It’s the one thing that as much as we try, we can never control. Yet one thing that we can master is our beauty routines, and the essential products that will not only make you feel amazing, but will give you extra time to enjoy your morning coffee (or get extra sleep).

Time. It’s the one thing that as much as we try, we can never control. Yet one thing that we can master is our beauty routines, and the essential products that will not only make you feel amazing, but will give you extra time to enjoy your morning coffee.

Spray on nail polish

The dilemma: you’re rushing to get ready for your important meeting when disaster strikes- you realise the mani you got just 2 days ago is already chipped! The answer is spray on nail polish. Yep, you read that right- there is such a thing as spray paint for your nails. What’s more, the formula is quick drying and comes in a range of on trend colours. What’s more to love?

Dry shampoo

Who would we be without dry shampoo? The torturous procedure of washing, blow drying and styling our hair is diminished thanks to this miracle product. Simply spray on your roots where your hair may be greasy, gently tousle in with your fingertips and brush through. Your hair will instantly be voluminous and fresh as a daisy.

Makeup wipes

Ok, we understand that makeup wipes are decidedly a beauty no-no as a sole skincare routine, yet you can’t deny that these aren’t handy. There’s nothing better than taking your makeup off after a long day before starting your beauty ritual at night, or even a quick refresh in the morning. Plus, it’s amazing for any minor clean ups (especially the daily smudge of our mascara that we always seems to create).

Matte lipstick

We love any dual action product, and matte lipsticks are one of those products which you wouldn’t think could be used for multiple purposes. Applying with stippling blush it can be used for a blush or a darker shade as a bronzer, and even an eye shadow.

Bronzing cream

Bronzing cream is definitely a holy grail product! If you’ve just gotten a tan, you can easily mix the product with your foundation to give your face an instant glow, or to fix up any patches as your tan wears off. For a dewy look, you can also use bronzing cream for your subtle contour.

Like a virgin: your first Brazilian wax thoughts

Written by Jessica Lunan

It’s one of those evil necessities that every woman experiences at least once in their life. This strange beauty regime (or should we say torture procedure?) has somehow become one of key ways for us women to tame our body hair.

Here are the thoughts you have when you get your first Brazilian wax.

Here are the thoughts you have when you get your first Brazilian wax.

1. Everyone gets a Brazilian so it couldn’t be that bad... could it? *gulp*.

2. I mean it’ll just be like getting my brows done... even though my eyes always end up watering but it’s not like I’m crying... ok I might be crying.

3. OK, don't cry (makes promise to self).

4. Oh no, what underwear do I have on again? Washing day was last week... please don’t be those old granny knickers!

5. *Subtly checks* OK phew, the underwear situation is fine.

6. Oh no what if it doesn't smell like a bed of roses?!

7. No one has complained before....

8. Were they just being polite? *starts panicking*

9. Ohhh noooo.

10. But wait she does this all of the time and it’s not like she’ll be sniffing around there? Keep it professional, it’s fine.

11. I wonder how much it’s going to hurt.

12. Now I’m sooo nervous. I think I need to go to the bathroom.

13. I wonder if everyone else in this waiting room are getting Brazilians too?

14. Oh no, the receptionist is calling my name.

15. Maybe I can just pretend it’s not me?

16. Don’t be silly you told her your name when you arrived.

17. Ugh, time to face the pain.

18. I feel like I’m going into battle or something.

19. Battle of the Brazilians.

20. She seems really nice and this music is so calming.

21. Stop blushing, she does this all of the time.

22. Oh no the crinkly paper... always awkward.

23. She wants me to do what?

24. Butterfly my legs?

25. I can hardly keep that pose in yoga class?

26. Ok, she’s seeing everything now.

27. Deep breaths, if all goes wrong you’ll never have to see her again.

[RELATED: Beauty trend revival: Bleaching body hair is back]

28. Who convinced me to do this again?

29. She is really mixing that pot of wax.

30. Now she’s asking me how my weekend was... how is she so calm?!

31. My heart is beating SO loud... can she hear it?

32. Is it weird if I close my eyes?

33. Ooo the warm wax actually feels nice.

34. Ok it’s on now there’s no going back but ripping it off.

35. Ok breathe breathe breathe breathe.

36. I can do this.

37. I’m sure childbirth would be way more painful. This is nothing...

38. Just do it!

41. Did she take off some skin? I’m sure I’m missing skin!

42. She’s still going.

43. OK she’s getting verrrrrry close to... I'm not sure if I've even gone there.

44. The anticipation!

Here are the thoughts you have when you get your first Brazilian wax.

45. Am I holding my breath?!

46. I am definitely holding my breath.

47. She’s still talking, can’t she see how much pain I’m in?

48. This has to be almost over by now?

49. Did I just make that noise in my head or out loud?

50. I think I just made it out loud!

51. OMG cringe.

52. How do people do this all the time?

53. Ow ow ow ow.

54. She seems to be stopping now?

55. Wait she’s wanting me to lift my knees up?

56. She wants to wax my butt?!

57. Do I have to?

58. It’s normal?

59. Why?

60. Ugh, ok she might as well see my whole nether regions.

61. Ok I’m definitely never ever doing this again!

62. OW.

63. It’s over!

64. I can breathe.

65. Is it weird that I feel like I need to give her a hug? Like I feel we went through something major together.

66. Oh, nope she’s still talking about her boyfriend.

67. OMG so smooth.

68. Wow this feels incredible.

69. So smooooooth.

70. I feel amazing.

71. I look amazing!

72. This was so worth it.

73. Pain, schmain.

74. She’s asking if I want to book my next appointment?

75. Yes please!

5 of the latest, craziest beauty trends

Written by Jessica Lunan

From the highlighter challenge to confetti eyeliner, here’s the latest makeup trends that are taking the beauty world by storm!

The highlighter challenge

This look is perfect for anyone wanting to create a blinding glow (seriously, for health and safety reasons please warn everyone around you to wear sunglasses asap!) First created by YouTuber, Mariya, this look involves using different highlighters to create your whole face of makeup, including the base, contour and highlight. Yep, you read that right, highlight on highlight! While it’s not an everyday look, for those obsessed with shimmer, this is one for you. Plus, the results are divine!

Marble lipstick

A photo posted by @dirtysweetvelvet on

Marble has been dominating the interior scene for a while, and now the beauty industry has created their own take. Illamasqua’s Lava Lip’s formula blends the two shades together when applying, meaning that with every wear a completely unique shade is created.

Confetti eyeliner

There is a new liner trend making waves within the beauty industry. Confetti eyeliner takes the traditional cat eye and gives it a shockingly bright twist. Like the recent bubble liner trend, confetti liner will inject instant, bold colour into a monochrome outfit. To create, simply dot an array of coloured liners in a winged liner shape. For extra glam, incorporate glitter and metallic liners into your look.

Gold mascara

A photo posted by(@dreamer_collective) on

If you love the metallic trend, yet you just want to dip your toe into the glitter, then gold mascara is for you. To wear, simply apply your usual mascara and then apply the golden product to the tips of your lashes. Like they say, if the eyes are the window to the soul then you might as well make them memorable.

 Tonal look

A photo posted by Brookelle McKenzie (@bybrookelle) on

Thanks to the Kardashian-Jenner’s, tonal dressing has been one trend that everyone has been coveting. Tonal makeup is the process of using colours of the same shade throughout your whole look, including lips, eyes and cheeks. While it does sound crazy, the results are beautiful. Pro tip: Use your matte liquid lipstick as liner. Simply apply with angle brush and viola- instant tonal winged liner.

Nails Inc. spray-on nail polish is a game changer

Welcome to 2016 where spray on nail polish is not a delusion, it is a reality.

Welcome to 2016 where spray on nail polish is not a delusion, it is a reality. Watch our video to see how it works.

Thank the heavens because they’ve heard our prayers and delivered you pretty paint in a tiny can.

It would only be a matter of time until a revolutionary product like this would hit the market and fulfill our fantasies. Now you can enjoy freshly coated nails within minutes. *praise-hands emoji*

Let’s be honest, getting your nails done is a luxury and sometimes life doesn’t permit you to run to your local salon. Or worst yet, you attempt a speedy polish at home and have zero chill which leaves you with a messy finish.

If you’re like us and somtimes find yourself too lazy busy to coat your fingertips with a gorgeous colour for a night out; then don’t worry, because girl this product will solve those dilemmas.

Repeat this motto after me. “Shake it. Spray it. Wash it. Wear it.”

And that’s it! Why are we raving? Because right now, it’s all about an innovative, spray-on nail polish that will give you the result of perfect polished nails in seconds! This never-before-seen technique evenly and efficiently applies colour to your nails so you can be out the door in no time.

We couldn't just take their word for it, we had to give this product a whirl to see if it is as good as it looks. Porchester Square (muted mushroom colour) was our go-to and the results were beyond impressive. Take look...

Step 1: Apply Nails Inc 2 in 1 base coat.

Step 4: Yes, your hands will be covered in paint! But... it washes off easily with warm soapy water.

Step 5: Voila! Admire your perfectly applied polish in a heartbeat.

Seriously, it was that easy. But what we quickly realised is that this product is great for a fast paint job but isn’t meant to replace the typical salon style manicure. In a way, it resembles dry shampoo. A quick fix so you can be instantly glam.

Available at in 4 colours the price is only $33 each. The 2 in 1 base and top coat is an easy $15 which will have your polish lasting up to 2-4 days.

We’d love to hear if you’re as obsessed as we are! So make sure you check it out and tag us in your photos on Instagram. Which colour will you choose?

Beauty Wars: Which state leads in brow or contouring

Written by

There's no denying that Australians are beauty addicts but you wouldn't have expected this...

There's no denying that Australians are beauty addicts but you won't expect this...

Fashion Weekly has collaborated with our friends at Adore Beauty to pull data on Australia's beauty habits. As our Country's leading online shopping destination for beauty products and cosmetics they have some pretty impressive statistics to reveal.

Now, it shouldn't surprise you that Australian women are some of the most glamorous in the world. Why? Because we spend a whopping 370million a year on lotions, creams and serums! To say we're beauty obsessed is an understatement.

From beauty scrubbers to contouring queens our Country happens to be a little fanatical. We're not going to lie, when these statistics hit our inboxes we didn't' expect Tasmania to be the curling divas or Western Australia to dominate in the brow arena. Curious to know more? Well read on to see each states favourite beauty trend.

Queensland: Beauty Scrubbers

Leading the way with a flawless base - Queenslanders are raving about face and body scrubs. If looking poolside ready isn't motivation enough, then the warm weather demands minimum makeup so these ladies are steering clear of dead skin cells ensuring their radiant skin looks fresh and fab all year long.

New South Wales: Sun Smart

It might not sound like the sexiest of topics, but being sun smart is exactly that... SMART. NSW buys the most amount of SPF beauty products with their favourites being SPF moisturisers. They'll be glowing and protected meaning they're total sun smart babes.

Victoria: Contouring Capital

Many of us have tried contouring at least once with the popular trend growing dramatically over the last 24 months. But no matter how much we try, Victorians are currently paving the way with their defined cheek bones proving that they are the contour queens.

South Australia: Sexy Hair

Luscious locks and sassy hair flicks are flooding South Australia. They have bought the most designer hair products, especially shampoos and conditioners. They say your hair is your crown, South Australian's seem to live by this ethos.

Northern Territory: Cleansing

Dominating the clear skin game, NT has their cleansing routine down pat. Drinking up the nutrients and vibrantly radiating - they're showing us how much they look after their skin.

Western Australia: All About The Brows

We all covet perfect brows. And so does WA who is leading the pack with the most amount of eyebrow products sold nationwide. Ahh, Cara Delevingne should watch out - there is some fierce competition in the room.

Tasmania: Curling Quarter

Tasmania is reigning supreme with sexy curls and natural beach waves. Hair curling tongs have been the most popular products sold in this state. They have been able to nail the highly coveted tresses sported down the runway of a Victoria's Secret runway show. Totes jealous!

She gave Joico's new InstaTint Temporary Colour Shimmer Sprays a try and the result was vibrant and totally festival worthy!

Impressively, all you have to do is spray these pigment-packed beauties directly onto the finished dos for an iridescent, insta-fabulous pop of colour. Or mix and mingle all five shades to create your own custom tint.

Our Editor gave Joico's new InstaTint Temporary Colour Shimmer Sprays a try and the result was vibrant and totally festival worthy!

You'll be shimmering, shining and dazzling for up to three days! And when you're ready, simply wash out the spray and you'll be back to your normal colour. It's such a fun way to try out the haute hue trends of the moment without getting too attached!

Here's how you can get Stacey's look in eight easy step.

Apply a mousse through the lengths and ends of towel-dried hair before blow drying to create texture and grip for styling.

Spray an array of Joico's InstaTint Temporary Colour Shimmer Sprays individually through the hair.

Part the hair and split the section into three strands for braiding.

Braid the three sections once with the two outside sections always moving under the middle section.

Scoop up sections of the hair and incorporate into the braid and repeat.

Tie off with an elastic band.

Loosely pull out on the braid to cause a fuller look.

Use bobby pins to clean up any loose hairs.

Lightly hairspray into place.

Finally, spray Joico's InstaTint Temporary Colour Shimmer Sprays on the sections of coloured hair to enhance the colour.

Rhys Williams talks Gilded Cage and what's next

Written by Jessica Lunan

We caught up with the creator of Australian makeup brand, Gilded Cage, to talk all things beauty!

Rhys Williams talks Gilded Cage

Rhys Williams was working in the mines in Czech Republic when a close call urged him to change careers and create Australian beauty brand, Gilded Cage. We caught up with Williams to talk beauty trends, starting a cosmetic brand and what the future holds.

You were working in a mine when you experienced the life-changing moment that led to launching your Australian beauty brand, Gilded Cage. Tell us a little bit about this journey?

RW: I was in Czech Republic, in over 50°C heat, 1.2 kilometres underground. I suddenly heard the earth cracking and caving behind the longwall supports, and I thought that I might vanish forever. I’d worked in many underground mines, but that was the first time I thought if something goes wrong, it’d be all over. That’s when I decided to do something more creative. Beauty was a way to channel my interests as a child and has become a career that I can build for the next thirty or forty years. I’ve never looked back.

How would you describe Gilded Cage?

RW: Singular Beauty.

As a recently launched brand, what do you bring to the beauty industry?

RW: Our brand is competing against a universal, one size fits all beauty format. Instead, we focus on charm, wit and the combined elements that make a woman beautiful. Gilded Cage protects, glorifies and highlights natural beauty. There’s so many ways to be beautiful which is why we believe that smooth, commercial beauty is boring.

Gilded Cage currently offers a selection of lipsticks, lip glosses and eye colours – what is your most popular product so far?

RW: Our Revelation long wear cream eyeshadows have recently taken over the sales of our Unleashed lipstick collection. I am incredibly excited about this, because the formula in terms of innovation and technology currently leads the world.

Women are embracing our timeless beyond trend shades and we are receiving great feedback on the unique felt tip applicator. What is most exciting, is that whether you use the applicator, your fingertip or an eyeshadow brush you can create high end, fool proof and lasting smoky eyes in minutes.

Gilded Cag owner talks creating makeup business

What do you predict to be the top beauty trend for the season ahead?

RW: Heavy contouring textures will face more competition from formulations that uses light to define and sculpt a woman’s face.

What is your recipe for success in the beauty world and what are your words of wisdom for others wanting to launch their own brand?

RW: Success takes a lifetime to build, it rarely happens overnight. My approach is that you build success every day through your actions. Success is often a painful, exhausting road that asks you to make many sacrifices along the way. In terms of advice, if you don’t love what you do, or believe in it then it’s time to find a new career.

[RELATED: The autumn winter 2016 beauty trends and expert tips]

Are you working on anything exciting in the near future?

RW: We have several exciting new formulations that will enter the market over the next three years. In some cases, there will be new additions to our existing collection, and completely new categories. We are also looking into creating fragrances when the time is right. It is always in the timing when you are building a brand.

Waist trainer review: the cursed hourglass figure

Written by

Welcome to 2016 where the ideal bodyshape is more unrealistic and unattainable than ever before.

Thanks to celebs like Kim Kardashian and Beyonce, us mere mortal are sucking, pulling and sweating the small stuff in hopes to attain the accentuated figure-of-the-moment. With today's ideal bodyshape of bigger lips, wider hips, DD perky breasts, tiny waists and toned thighs (with a thigh gap) - it only proves that the hourglass figure is cursed.

Celebrating curves is one thing but idolising them as society's new perfect has put enormous pressures on women to diet and exercise in unjustly ways.

Which is why I controversially conformed to the trend and decided to try the coveted waist trainer. My nervous self willingly gave it a go and documented the experience so you could be kept in the loop and know the honest truth.

Would this experience give me the curves that everyone desires? And was it worth it?

Day 1 | Time: 4 hours

Eager and enthusiastic to see what Kimmy K and celebs alike have been fussing about, I attempted to waist-train it up. But I was quickly left disappointed with the struggle to put the corset on by myself. I had to call in assistance because seeing over my boobs was impossible and it was so tight I needed teamwork to suck myself in and clip it up.

Positive: My posture was on point.
Negative: My breathing was a little shorter and to my despair, I only ate half of my dinner. Why? Because eating more was asking to amplify the uncomfortable feeling.

Day 2 | Time: 3.5 hours

Putting together my outfit while trying to hide this undergarment was a challenge in itself.

The drive to work was slightly awkward. I've never sat so upright in my life.

Similarly, whilst I usually slouch at my desk all day long, I found myself fighting against my new restriction. I had to consciously adjust myself to correct my spinal alignment. That's good, right?

Positive: I walked taller and sat up straighter.
Negative: By the 3 hour mark I started to feel discomfort in my lower abdomen which resulted in a slight thumping sensation. I immediately took off the waist trainer and gave my body a rest.

Day 5 | Time: 5 hours

By this point I'm feeling a little more accustomed to my new frenemy.

Lunch was an effort as - once again I only ate half of my meal. Feeling full is the awful part - it's a gross feeling where you're not sure if the food is going down or coming back up!

Positive: My posture is slightly improving without the trainer on.
Negative: Back rolls and a muffin top is a serious issue.

Day 7: Time: 4 hours

By this point I feel as if I'm in a love hate relationship. I do like how it shapes my waist into an enviable Kimmy K figure - but without out it - I'm totally regular. On the plus side, I found myself standing and sitting straighter and naturally pulling in my stomach.

I went for a brisk walk where I was left panting from the lack of oxygen flowing through my lungs. (my brisk walk didn't last very long)

Honestly, I don't see how it's supposed to mould your body - because as soon as I take off the corset everything bursts back into position (yes, tummy out!).

Final thoughts:

Honestly, the over exaggerated hour glass figure seems like wishful thinking.

The only way your body will adapt to these extremes is via a strict exercise routine, healthy diet and maybe sculpting or surgery.

In my opinion, waist training is an illusive idea to convince women that they can achieve some 'perfect' figure through dramatic measures.

I did lose a little weight but that's because I couldn't eat a full meal. And I struggled to keep it on for longer than 5 hours. The discomfort and constrictions were a real problem. I found myself count downing the hours because I couldn't wait to rip it off.

Queensland beauty lovers rejoice! Sephora is finally gracing the sunshine state, and its magical doors are set to open on the 15th of July, 2016.

Queensland beauty lovers rejoice. Sephora is finally gracing the sunshine state, and its magical doors are set to open on the 15th of July, 2016.

The beauty haven, which will be located at the newly redeveloped Gold Coast’s Pacific Fair, will be the fourth Sephora store to grace Australia; with two being located in Sydney and one in Melbourne.

The Country Manager of Sephora Australia, Libby Amelia, stated that the beauty giant is excited to finally give Queenslanders a taste of the wonderful world of Sephora beauty.

“The store experience at Sephora is unrivalled. We operate a self-service model, where the customer is encouraged to play, try and explore on their own! Alternatively, beauty advisers are always available for customers seekinginformation, service and expertise,” said Ms Amelia.

Fingermouthing: This trend will lift your selfie game

Written by Jessica Lunan

We’ve all heard of (and perfected) the duck face and the fish gape. Now there’s a new pose to lift your selfie game, introducing fingermouthing.

We’ve all heard of (and perfected) the duck face and the fish gape. Now there’s a new pose to lift your selfie game, introducing fingermouthing.

Sported by the likes of Kylie Jenner, Ashley Benson and Khloe Kardashian, fingermouthing is the method of strategically dangling a finger in front of your lips to create a completely off guard, candid pose (although we know that it’s the 100th selfie you’ve taken, don’t lie).

A photo posted by King Kylie (@kyliejenner) on

Pioneer of the questionably named trend, Kylie Jenner revealed in an interview with Elle UK that she began posing with her fingers in front of her mouth because she felt self-conscious about her lips.

“I was so insecure about my lips. Even now I always post photos where my finger is always in front of my’s a habit. I would always cover my lips. couldn’t even talk to people,” said Jenner.

We’re happy that King Kylie has now found peace with her enviable lips, and we would also like to thank her for providing us with yet another, seductive pose to perfect.

What’s more, fingermouthing is the perfect way to subtly show off your fresh manicure, especially if your nails match your pout- what more can you love?

We're off to pretend like we're not practicing our fingermouthing pose. If you need us, you'll know where to find us.

The glaring truth about 'body positivity'

What really comes to mind when we use this ever-ambiguous term?

What really comes to mind when we use this ever-ambiguous term?

Gone are the days when a 'bikini body' was a carefully curated physique we all slaved away to cultivate before summer crept around the corner. Finally, we have come to the realisation that anyone can (and should) wear a bikini, thank you very much.

The fashion industry (and the entire world for that matter) has undergone a recent, radical paradigm shift and the sketch of the 'ideal' female physique has been completely scrapped and re-drawn.

Over the years, we have been presented with a vast range of predominately unobtainable (and frankly unhealthy) images of the perfect body. From scary skinny supermodels such as Kate Moss to impossibly curvaceous celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, young girls have always been encouraged to alter their bodies in order to feel beautiful.

However, the new age supermodel is rather about a healthy, fit physique to aspire to. Instead of starving themselves, girls are encouraged to hit the gym and aim to change their lifestyles, not just their bodies.

Designers all over the globe have jumped on board this fantastic new initiative and are refusing to hire the overly gaunt young models that were once so highly coveted. The industry is not only promoting beauty, but health, and we couldn't be happier about it.

[RELATED: Curves call for celebrating]

Despite this emphasis on health and fitness, as a culture we’re more accepting of everyone's differing lifestyle choices and corresponding physiques.

Dresses do not simply come in sizes 0, 2 and 4 any more. We are slowly breaking down stereotypes and celebrating beauty at every size.

Of course, we all still feel the sometimes insurmountable pressure to look like the prototypical, beautiful girl, but body positivity is no longer the responsibility of the industry. It is up to us to embrace our bodies, bumps and all and be confident in our own skin.

Body positivity is a necessary quality for every strong, young woman battling it out in our ever changing society. No one can predict what weight, height, hair colour or clothing will be desirable 10 years from now. But we can control our opinion of ourselves. Be confident, be positive and be proud of your body; you are beautiful.

10 tracks to get you in the exercise mood

Written by Jessica Lunan

With winter come's countless of excuses not to exercise. These tracks will keep you motivated and moving all season long.

With winter come's countless of excuses not to exercise. These tracks will keep you motivated and moving all season long

Ahh, winter. We love the break you give us from the sweltering heat (especially here in Brisbane), and you give us an excuse to rug up, stay home and eat all the comfort food we can imagine. However, with winter comes the countless excuses as to why we don’t need to exercise. It’s too cold to go for a run. Who needs a bikini body in winter anyways? Sound familiar? Here’s our top 10 tracks to get you in the exercise mood this winter.

Sorry by Beyoncé.

Yep, we’re still not over the surprise drop of Queen Bey’s album, Lemonade. There’s something about this track that just makes us feel so fierce. When summer rolls around you won’t be sorry for working it!

Work by Iggy Azalea

It’s a golden classic, and will get you through the toughest of squats. Just think of Azalea’s enviable booty as you’re work, work, working on your sh*t.

Grown by Little Mix

UK girl band, Little Mix, have definitely been making waves within Australia of late, with their hits Hair and Secret Love Song being played on the Australian radios non stop. This track isn’t as well known, but we can guarantee it’ll be the next Little Mix hit!

[RELATED: Stress is to blame for stubborn, hard to lose kilos]

Runnin’ (Lose It All) by Naughty Boy ft. Beyoncé

Ok, we admit that Beyoncé is our number one workout Queen. If the track’s name doesn’t give it away, it has the perfect tempo to set your pace while working on your cardio.

Started from the Bottom by Drake

Everyone loves a little bit of Drake, and this is a throwback to his first album. It’ll remind you that everyone starts somewhere.

Work by Rihanna

It’s an obvious one, but this is a workout anthem that we can’t miss out on. After all, Bad Gal RiRi is body goals!

10 tracks to get you in the exercise mood

The Sound by The 1975

This little known tune is definitely one to listen to. The 80’s nostalgia is strong, but if the aerobics classes of that era is anything to go off, you’ll have buns of steel in no time by listening to this track.

Sorry by Justin Beiber

Yep, you read that right. We’re still obsessing over Beib’s latest album, especially this track. Maybe it’s because the dancing film clip is still our favourite thing ever.

This Is What You Came for by Calvin Harris ft. Rihanna

Calvin Harris and Rihanna have the unique ability to make incredible tunes that we can’t help to get obsessed with. Also, the electropop beats will help you get through the hardest of workouts.

Shake It Off by Taylor Swift

We couldn’t list our favourite workout tracks without T-Swizzle! This song will help you  forget the haters and focus your breakup anger into an incredible workout. Hey, at least you’re putting it to something productive.

Beauty trend revival: Bleaching body hair is back

Bleaching your body hair is back, here's what it is and how to do it!

Bleaching your body hair is back, here what is it and how to do it

In the modern day we are blessed with a variety of options when it comes to dealing with body hair.

From shaving, waxing and removal creams to more permanent laser treatments, there are a number of ways to get rid of those fuzzy hairs. However the latter all have a shortcoming – whether it be pain, cost or the hair growing back.

This is why we’re introducing you to a beauty trend which is making a revival – bleaching. While bleaching your body hair is not a recent invention, in fact it is widely popular in South American countries where the 'peachy fuzz' (or golden veil) is considered sexy; it is not as commonly discussed as say, waxing.

So what is it?

Basically, this is just lightening your body hair and making it appear more golden and less visible, however this treatment won’t remove your hair.

Who can do it?

This treatment works best if you ahve darker hair and on spots where you have fine hair, like your arms or on your tummy.

There are a number of at-home kits available which shouldn’t take longer than 15 minutes.

What are the advantages?

Lightening your body hair is an affordable and fast DIY beauty treatment (done from the comfort of your own home) in which, unlike hair removal methods, the hair doesn’t leave the follicle which means no stubbly regrowth. Plus some believe with a beautiful tan, golden body hair looks sexy!

What are the disadvantages?

While the appearance of the hair changes and it is less visible there is in reality just as much hair as before the treatment – meaning no hair-free smooth skin. Be aware that bleaching your body hair can also temporarily lighten your skin tone. Finally it is always a good idea to conduct a patch test to ensure to your skin doesn’t react to the formula.

Glow from the inside with The Beauty Chef

Fashion Weekly chatted with Carla Oates, known as ‘The Beauty Chef’ about taking care of your skin from the ‘inside’.

Based in Sydney, Carla Oates has been researching and writing about organic beauty and health for the last fifteen years. This passion and knowledge led to the creation of The Beauty Chef brand.

Utilising the power of prebiotics, probiotics and bio-fermentation, The Beauty Chef Inner Beauty Powders and liquid Boosts use an exclusive Flora Culture™ process with 25 years of research behind it, to create supercharged whole food supplements that address inner gut health for beautiful and radiant skin.

Where does your passion and interest in organic health and beauty stem from?

CO: I published a book, Feeding Your Skin, and had a DIY beauty column for The Sunday Telegraph for eight years, as well as being the Natural Beauty Editor for Wellbeing Magazine. During this time I made all my own skincare from scratch and was giving them to friends and family to use. I created quite a demand and that demand grew to friends of friends.

Creating The Beauty Chef brand seemed like a natural progression. I started experimenting with lacto-fermenting different blends of skin-loving ingredients, and the result was my Inner Beauty Powder, now named Glow, which promotes skin radiance from the inside out.

What does the term ‘beauty begins in the belly’ mean to you?

CO: This is our trademark mantra: Digestive health is key for healthy, radiant skin.

What makes The Beauty Chef Inner Beauty Powders different to regular health-food supplements?

CO: We were the first to create a bio-fermented inner beauty powder, and we also use our own unique fermentation process called FLORA CULTURE.

We are very focused on getting nutrients from whole foods and natural probiotics. Our products are literally alive with beneficial bacteria that help to balance digestive health, plus all the bio-available nutrients from superfoods that nourish the skin.

You have developed the world's first 'living skincare range', what exactly does that mean?

CO: It is ‘living’ because of the live enzymes and probiotics, as well as fermentation making the ingredients more bio-available for the skin to use.

The ingredients have been broken down to be more easily absorbed as well as more nutritious and active.

What is your favourite go-to healthy snack for when you’re on the go?

CO: I love these Bliss Balls that I have made using The Beauty Chef GLOW.

The Beauty Chef bliss balls recipe

As an advocate for healthy living, what would we find in your fridge or pantry on a regular day?

CO: In my fridge I always have filtered water, lots of greens like veggies and seasonal fruits, bircher muesli and yoghurt, Meredith Valley goats cheese, organic chicken, coconut milk, herbs and spices like garlic, fresh turmeric, lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves for curry.

In the pantry I keep quinoa, chia seeds, canned sardines, tamari almonds, organic nuts like almonds and brazil nuts and dark chocolate.

Do you have any exciting ventures coming up?

CO: We are expanding globally with a new stockist and have additions and updates to the range to announce soon.
