Summer is here! It’s time for music festivals, beach trips and romantic getaways. So how should you paint your face to suit the warmer weather? Put down your deep wine-hued lipsticks and your contour kit. If you love to change up your makeup look to suit the season, check out our top tips for a summery makeup look:
First things first: the perfect base. The extra time in the sun during the warmer months darkens your skin or you could even be doing a sun-safe spray tan. So your usual foundation may now be too pale. Don’t keep using it – your face will be too pale for your body, giving you “floating face” syndrome. If you don’t want to shade match a slightly darker summer foundation, add some darkening drops to your current one and ensure to use bronzer daily to keep your features looking sun-kissed. Hot tip: use a dewy foundation or a setting spray with a dewy finish to keep that summer glow all day long.
Kimmy K herself advocates nontouring. After the sculpting power of contouring took the makeup world by storm, everyone was bronzing and blending like a pro. Now it’s time to go a little more natural. For a fresh summer look that still defines your features, apply highlighter and dust it over points the sun will hit. The tops of your cheekbones and your brow bones are a great place to start, plus the bridge of your nose and tips of your cupid’s bow. Forget the contour, look less diva glam and more mermaid fresh!
Glitter is the perfect way to up the ante. Whether it’s for a Christmas party, a date or you just want to feel extra fab, glitter should be your summer go-to. Add it to the centre of your eyelids after doing your eyeshadow to glam up the look, or dab some under your eyes. Keep it to the outside edges for a sexy smoulder or along the lower lash line for a funky glitter tears look.
Use a pale, shell-coloured eyeshadow at the inner corner of the eyes to brighten them and make them appear wider. It’s an instant wakeup and gives you a refreshed look. Blend it across the lid and around the eye a little to avoid looking too “done”.
Two lip looks will dominate this summer: sultry nude and youthfully bright. For the nude, ensure it has a pink or caramel base to avoid a cold, mushroom-coloured undertone and dab a subtle shimmer over the top for a laid back, beachy look. For a bright lip, use a highly pigmented hot pink. Set the area around your lips with loose powder, bake (sit for a few minutes) and then lightly dust it away. This blots away oil and prevents lipstick from bleeding.
Take the beach look one step further with this sultry look. Accentuate your features with bronzer and highlighter, then use a shimmery copper colour on your lips. Use a similar colour on your eyes, accentuated with rose gold for an on-trend gleam. Keep this look fairly relaxed by blending around the eyes and under the lower lash line, while keeping your brows neat and natural for a casually sexy look.
