As the cosy knits-and-jeans season winds down, even the whiff of mown grass in the air can suddenly transport us to a poolside banana lounger, cocktail in hand. But if you’re like me (human), you might still be carrying a little winter insulation of your own. Look, it happens. Crisp, chilly nights are for curling up with comforting treats and endless mugs of hot chocolate. But when spring is sprung on us, we may not be totally ready to remove the winter jacket, which hides a multitude of sins. And usually has lots of pockets for snacks.
So imagine my panic when I realised that my trip to Bali is less than seven weeks away, and I’ve never felt less like a bikini model in my life!
Fear not, ladies! All it takes to be bikini-ready is a few tips and tricks, plus some self-love and confidence. If you don’t have time for a fitness regime, try these cheats for a bikini body:
Get a spray tan
Not only does the sun-kissed glow make you look like you were born frolicking in the surf, it’s slimming too. You can even get your talented beautician to do some sculpting and shading, which gives you a more toned appearance.
Tummy troubles? Wear a one-piece
The one-piece swimsuit has made a comeback in a big way, which is great for gals who don’t like to show their tums. Go for a low-backed red number to channel your inner Pamela Anderson or try a high-cut suit in a pretty print to lengthen your legs and make you feel totally tropical glam.
Wear a sun shirt or sporty bikini top
If you get those annoying little chicken wings below your bra or bikini strap and are self-conscious about your back, there are ways to combat this. Wearing a sun shirt is a great option because then you’re being sun smart too – bonus! There are some cute short- and long-sleeved designs out there.
Sporty bikini tops are also an option here. They typically are shaped like a sports bra, which serves the double purpose of covering more of your back with their racerback style and of keeping everything secure at the front! Don’t we all dread the beach nip slip?
Sarongs and skirts
The booty is back, and lots of bikini babes are rocking the cheeky cut Brazilian bikini bottom to show off their assets. If this isn’t your style, you can find bikini bottoms with little frills or skirts attached, or throw on a cute sarong. Tie it in a neat little knot at one hip for a sassy asymmetrical look.
Hats and sunnies
I know I’m not the only one whose hair expands with the humidity. An oversized sunhat does wonders for keeping your hair under control as well as protecting your scalp, face, shoulders, neck and décolletage from UV rays. Sunnies are also great for keeping hair back from the face. The hottest sunglasses trend right now is flat metallic lenses. Nothing is more beachy-cool.
