Our influencer series highlights the movers and shakers who are breaking the rules and writing their own journey - their way. They’re doing wonderful things, making a difference and getting noticed.
We sat down with singer/songwriter Ella Ferdinands to discuss her love of music, where it all began and the handful of things she can't live without. As a Brisbane-based talent, she continues to pursue her solo career in music while making waves and getting attention from around the globe.
After releasing her brand new single 'Keep My Heart', the track enjoyed spins on air and landed top 5 in the pop category at the Australian Independent Music Awards.
In early 2016, Ferdinands spent time in the U.K. with industry professionals working on new music. She was thrilled to work alongside talented, likeminded people, and was over the moon for the release of her highly anticipated track "Chemistry". She’s keen to show off her music video which was produced and directed by Connor O’Connor and features styling from our Director and Stylist, Stacey O’Keeffe.
I'm inspired by...
EF: People who work hard, are persistent and take risks.
Favourite fashion quote...
EF: I have two favourite fashion quotes. “People will stare. Make it worth their while.” - Harry Winston and “I always find beauty in things that are odd and imperfect – they are much more interesting.” - Marc Jacobs.
Ultimate style staple...
EF: Anything with a high neckline.
Can't live without...
EF: Music of course! My family, paw-paw ointment and of course my mum's cooking.
I'm passionate about...
EF: Every aspect of music – songwriting, recording and performing live!
My fashion hate...
EF: Kitten heels. Each to their own but they don’t look too flattering on me.
Ultimate beauty tip...
EF: 100% rosehip oil! I use this every night with my restorative night crème from Essano. My grandma (mum’s mum) has such beautiful, radiant skin and from a young age she has always used rosehip oil.
Biggest fashion regret...
EF: This makes me laugh every time I think about it. Back in the day, I used to be obsessed with those thong/kitten heels. Oh dear, my biggest regret!
Tell us about the epiphany moment when you decided to follow your dreams and pave your own journey?
EF: The moment I decided to create my own opportunities and follow my passion was after I co-wrote my first single 'Dapper Love'. I loved what had been created and I also fell in love with the process and wanted more and more and more.
What’s the most rewarding thing about following your passion?
EF: The most rewarding thing about following your passion is meeting likeminded, genuine people who share common interests with you. Oh and not to mention how rewarding it is to receive huge amounts of love from family, friends and people who dig what I do and love the music I make.
What are your tips to breaking into the market and getting noticed?
EF: I’m still learning tips along the way, however the best tips I can give about breaking into the market and getting noticed is to be you (sounds so corny, but quite true). Persistence, dedication and hard work are essential in this industry. Rejection is part of the process, so take all feedback on board and keep going.
Who inspires you and why?
EF: People who work hard, are passionate and who are persistent. It also inspires me musically to see any artist succeed, despite challenges or obstacles. My parents are the biggest inspirations in my life.
How do you handle social media hate or negativity?
EF: You’re not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, remember that.
What advice would you give our readers who are wanting to step outside of the box?
EF: The best advice I can give is to be yourself, be kind, take risks and work hard.
What is one trait that every business babe needs?
EF: It is so important to stay true to yourself and do what makes you happy. Surround yourself with positive people and lastly, don’t take yourself too seriously and a sense of humour always helps.
What's next for you?
EF: I’ve just recorded the vocals to my next single “Higher”, which is in production now. So excited! I love the way this song was produced. I worked with a producer/artist that I respect so much - Alius.
