Menswear coat secrets revealed

The Vostok | The Yukon | The Plateau

Queensland has reached a breezy 18c during the day and crisp 11c at night, which is why it may just be the right time to invest in a custom overcoat. The must have winter addition to any man’s wardrobe. A classic look for the perfect gentlemen and this investment will last you a lifetime.

The Overcoat

Historically crafted in a heavier wool or flannel, the overcoat is worn to the knee or calf in the winter months for warmth. Traditionally, in the cooler climates it's worn ankle-to-thigh-length. This piece of outerwear classically comes with a larger collar and epaulettes. The overcoat is one of the most classic and flattering staples of menswear. It projects confidence, authority and enhances a man’s silhouette through widening the shoulders and lengthening the body.

A massive advantage of the overcoat is it is so versatile. It can easily be worn over your suit or sports jacket during the day or in the evening as a more formal item that finishes off your ensemble. There are many different ways to style your custom overcoat, ways in which to make it personal.

My Style Tip: Always go for the additional full canvas when designing your custom overcoat, this will encourage the fabric to drape and cover any problem areas.

The Peacoat

A peacoat is an outer coat that is generally constructed of a navy-coloured heavy wool. Originally it was worn by sailors of European countries and later by the American navies. Currently, worn by those on Wall Street or those who are a fan of Burberry. But don’t worry, your peacoat does not have to come with a high-end price tag. Custom menswear company George & King are renowned for creating high end looks with non-exclusive price tags.

My Style Tip: Widen the lapel and opt for a double-breasted look with a belt to create your personally designed peacoat. Choose from our Italian Vitale Barberis Canonico luxurious Winter Flannel range. We have over a hundred colours to choose from so why stick to navy?

The Topcoat

The topcoat is a lightweight jacket traditionally worn above the knee. In the warmer climates a topcoat replaces the suit jacket. In the cooler months the lightweight material adds an extra layer of warmth without becoming weighed down by the fabric composition. The trench coat is the most popular form of the topcoat. This coat style protects you from the elements whilst remaining stylish.

My Style Tip: Choose a lighter weight wool. A fine tweed in a blue or brown to ensure it matches both your corporate and casual wardrobe. Opt for single breasted with a peak or wide notch lapel. This is a must have garment in any gentlemen’s wardrobe.
