Gabdala Activewear is set to launch their new collection at Adevee Fashion Festival!

The countdown is on for ADEVEE Fashion Festival this October. Taking place in Melbourne, the fashion filled event will bridge the gap between stylish clothes and size. It doesn't end there, as ADEVEE Fashion's eBoutique is home to an array of designers who make clothes for curve and inbetweenie men and women. So shopping can now be a breeze no matter where you are in Australia and beyond.

To celebrate, we spoke with Elizabeth Kookarkin from Gabdala Activewear who will be showcasing her new collection at this show-stopping affair. Have you grabbed your tickets yet?

Read her exclusive interview with Fashion Weekly below.

Let's talk about how you came to this industry. Elizabeth, how and when did your fashion career begin?

EK: Growing up in Sydney, my sister and I were consumed by sport. Whether it was tennis, swimming or beach days, we were always doing something active. And as I grew older, my second love became fashion!

My work experience has always gravitated towards the fashion industry - retail, modelling and working as an assistant buyer for a major fashion label, which gave me the opportunity to learn the industry from the ground up. It has been my dream to create an activewear label for women that is functional for all shapes and sizes.

In mid-2014, I moved from talking about this dream to starting to design shapes and sizes that worked with this concept to create a range of activewear that possesses a fashion forward yet practical style that can be worn by all modern women. The focus is on quality, fit and attention to detail. So in September, 2015 we launched Gabdala Activewear.

You and your sister Alex are the brains behind Gabdala, what is it like working together? Does it ever get tricky being business partners and family?

EK: To be quite honest, I love working with my sister. Like most start-up businesses, we lack time and manpower. My sister and I do everything. We run every aspect of the business from building and marketing the brand; managing the website, online shopping and social media; working at the markets; through to designing, researching and managing stock and manufacturing. We work well together as we know each other so well and our skill sets complement each other.

Where did the name Gabdala come from?

EK: We named the business after our youngest sister Gabrielle. We used to call her Gabdala when she was younger as it was a combination of ‘Gaby and darling’- and we decided we loved the name for our brand.

Since starting your label, you’ve focused on creating 'a range of Activewear that possesses a fashion-forward yet practical style that can be worn by all modern women,' ranging from sizes 8-22. Why is this an important brand etho?

EK: Comfortable activewear is often difficult for women to find. Many women find the shapes and cuts fit incorrectly or are unavailable in their size. My dream is not only to have women look good as they sweat, but look good all day from the gym to the street, irrespective of whether they are a size 8 or 22. I want to motivate women to become more active by using the power of clothing to inspire healthy, active lifestyles.

The hype is starting to build around Adevee Fashion Festival as ticket purchases are getting snapped up quickly. Can you tell us why you're excited to showcase your label, Gabdala, at the highly-anticipated fashion event?

EK: We are so excited about showing at Adevee Fashion Festival as it will be the launch of our next collection! We are most excited for it to be revealed on beautiful, healthy women of all shapes and sizes. This is a dream come true for us as a brand. We haven't had the opportunity to showcase our styles on plus size models on the runway and it will be such a celebration for diversity and inclusion. It is also a fantastic opportunity for us to reach the movers and shakers of the curvy fashion world. We hope to meet so many professionals and influences in the industry to make connections that will evolve into future projects and collaborations.

In a few words, how would you describe your new collection that will be showcased at Adevee Fashion Festival?

EK: Sports glam. We have turned up the volume in the style department with bright colours to start summer with a bang. Our Gabdala Girls are fashionistas and this is what they are demanding. Great, comfortable, functional styles with a feminine silhouette, enhanced with fantastic prints and colours.

Gabdala is now stocked on Adevee Fashion’s eBoutique. Why is this a positive alignment for your label?

EK: We want to reach as many women as possible on inclusive platforms that celebrate all shapes and sizes. Adevee has launched into the market with such a bang and has been an answer to the demand for the ‘in-betweenie’ and curve fashion marketplace. I am an in-betweenie size and have been my whole life and know what a hole in the market there is. It is so great to come together with other brands that offer products to this market that has been neglected for so long.

If there was one thing you could change about the mainstream fashion industry, what would it be?

EK: I would like the fashion industry to use the power of clothing to inspire healthy, confident women, and encourage women to be the best version of themselves. I think that what you wear makes a big difference to your mood, so looking good; being fit and glowing with health is a way to boost the empowerment of women. I would like to think of myself as a good role model for young girls in both my business and lifestyle. I am always conscious of my health and maintaining a strong and functional body. I also don’t believe in the glass ceiling and would like to motivate all women to achieve their dreams.

Is there one hero piece within your range that customers love season after season?

EK: When it comes to active wear nothing beats a black legging. We are so proud of our Carbon Compression Leggings that have been our best seller by far! They are high waisted and have compression technology that will support you through any workout. Pair them with a sexy shirt and heels and they will transform into a polished look for a night out.

In your own words, why should our readers buy tickets to Adevee Fashion Festival?

EK: The runway line up! There is such an amazing and diverse collection of designers showing that there will be something for everyone. Plus, to see all the beautiful textiles that these designers use can never translate in photos. Nothing beats seeing designs in person on a runway.

What's next for Gabdala?

EK: Collaboration, collaboration, collaboration! We are currently working with other Australian designers to fuse gorgeous and unique design aesthetics with high quality functional fashion. We are so inspired by young, up-and-coming talents we have in Australia and want to harness it into our collections.
