Take a glimpse into the busy lives of designer duo, Naomi and Kirsty from Mara Swim as they prepare for the launch of their new collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane.

With less than 1 week until Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane, we caught up with designer sister-duo, Naomi and Kirsty from Mara Swim as they each take us through their days as business women and busy mums. Kirsty has a 2 year old (Billie) and a 7 week old (Evie), and Naomi has a 4 month old (Pearl). As you can imagine, they're juggling work, new borns and family all the while living apart. Kirsty lives in Brisbane while Naomi is in Townsville. Despite the location difference, they Facetime each other throughout the day and have managed to build a successful swimwear brand that is a total game changer.

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind the new collection?

The inspiration behind our first collection, Au, has been driven by our initial concept of creating luxurious swimwear that protects women from the sun, which was motivated by Naomi’s Melanoma. We wanted to join luxury with necessity and we have combined that with Earth’s natural treasures, like gold and precious stones in all of our pieces.

Why are you excited to be showcasing your designs at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane?

As a new Australian brand, it's an honour to be showcasing our very first collection in front of Australia’s fashion elite. To be affiliated with the Mercedes Benz Fashion icon that is synonymous with the leaders in Australias’s fashion industry, is a dream turned into reality. The Festival has been a massive stage and launchpad for new designers. We are so excited to be recognised as the future of fashion and share our label to inspire more women to protect their beautiful skin with exquisite swimwear.

What's your most favourite thing about being a fashion designer?

Knowing that we are changing the concept of what people think sun protection looks like and potentially saving lives. We love inspiring women by turning something unattractive, with a negative vibe into a positive and a high end piece of luxury. We do really love pushing the boundaries. And bringing high fashion luxury swimwear together with sun protection hasn't been done like MARA swim.

A Day In The Life Of Designer Kristy from Mara Swim

6am: Woken by 2 year old, my ONLY HOT cup of tea for the day.

7am: Feed baby, and two year old breakfast and throw down a piece of toast.

8am: Ring Naomi (the first of the 50 calls a day!) Collaborate deadlines and tasks for the day.

9am: Check emails, process orders placed after 8pm from the previous business day.

10am: Feed baby, package orders and place children and orders in car and run off to the post office.

12pm: Get home, follow up on confirmation for postage and tracking of orders for customers. Look over to see that my two year old had decorated herself and the floor with the RED PAID stamp.

1pm: Quick lunch and bed time for 2 year old, 2hrs of complete concentration to do business calls and ring Naomi.

3pm: New designs research, feeding and afternoon tea for the children.

4pm: Baby in her bouncy on office desk, movie on in the lounge and making final calls for the day and email follow up.

5pm: Finish up in the office until children go to bed. Carefully manoeuvre myself over all the land mines on the office floor such as upside-down staples, pens and USB cords.

6pm: Bath time for everyone.

7pm: Dinner.

8pm: Bedtime for children. Process orders ready for posting the next day.

9pm: My time. Boil the jug for a cuppa tea. Nope too tired to make one, go to bed.
