We often associate bad hair days to lack of sleep and kinky tendrils. What if we told you that having bad hair days where your locks don’t obey on command can be attributed to some everyday bad habits. Price Attack has shared seven unhealthy hair habits you need to quit now – and of course, how to fix them. Don’t worry, we are guilty of these too sometimes!

1. Washing your hair daily

Washing your hair with shampoo and conditioner is one of the simplest and most valuable steps in any hair care routine. It’s the most basic tool when it comes to providing your hair with the TLC it deserves, therefore it’s important to get it right.

We know that everyone wants to have luscious and lustering locks. We also know that washing your hair every day is the wrong way to go about it. When you wash your hair, you’re aiming to get rid of the oil, but if you wash it too much you are drying out your scalp and producing more oil as a result. It can also strip your hair of its natural rejuvenating oils; causing damage to your roots and ultimately your ends – meaning length loss!

We know it can be hard to break a daily habit, so we recommend either setting an alarm for specific days/times or placing the bottles out of reach from the shower to resist the temptation!

2. Using the wrong shampoo and conditioner for your hair

It’s no secret that everybody’s hair is different. Whether it’s blonde or brunette, curly or straight, thick or thin, there is a little something out there for all hair types. Still, with so many products on offer, people are yet to understand the beauty of having a product that’s good quality and perfectly suited to your hair.

If you invest in shampoo and conditioner that considers the elements of your hair (i.e. curls or thinkness), Price Attack guarantees that it will make your hair luscious and shiny. Buying super market shampoo and conditioner – although sometimes a cheaper option – can add yucky chemicals to your hair such as parabens that clog hair follicles and drain colour.

3. Brushing Wet Hair

Do you style or brush your hair when it’s wet? If the answer is yes, it is time to change your ways!

Brushing or styling wet hair puts tension on your roots and hair follicles, which can lead to major breakage and frizz. If you can’t break this habit then you can use a wide tooth comb such as an afro comb that will get rid of tangle without the pressure. You can also put in a leave in conditioner and a detangler in your ends and apply with your fingers, which will help with brushing later.

Stop those bad hair habits today! Here's how to correct them.

4. Excessive heat

No matter how hard we try, we cannot steer clear of heat-styling tools. We all love to make our hair looking elegant and styled with a straightener, curling iron or hair dryer, but excessive use of heat-styling products without proper protection can actually prove to be more of a curse than a blessing!

To avoid the gradual damage of your hairs surface when using these tools, Price Attack endorse using heat protectants to restore your hair back to its natural health and create a layer of protection between your hair and the heat. Our favourite is AG Smooth Firewall Argan Flat Iron Spray because it doesn’t leave any residue and smells amazing!

5. Hot Showers

Just like heat-styling products, steaming hot showers can be detrimental to your locks. We aren’t saying to avoid a fabulously steamy shower; we purely suggest you limit the deliciously hot ones to once-a-week and keep your others to a warmer temperature or use a shower cap if you aren’t washing your hair.

Constant hot showers can dry out your scalp and can create brittle and split hairs. Who knew?!

6. Sleeping with cotton pillow cases

Yep. It’s a thing. When you think about it, it’s not that crazy though. Your pillow absorbs a lot of moisture and bacteria from your skin and hair so when you sleep with a dirty pillow case then you’re just going to dirty your hair and increase oil production.

Rough cotton also rubs against the strands and can create breakages so there’s that too. Not only that, if you love to cradle your head under your pillow with your hands – hate to say it but you’re smothering your hair which creates bed head and frizziness.

7. Keep your hair tied up

Wearing your hair down is amazing... you know, until it gets in your face, in your mouth, tickles the back of your neck and takes a dip in your coffee cup. The second it gives you 'tude, you tie it back with the trusty elastic you never leave home without. But did you know it was causing damage? When you do this consistently over time, the constant tension will damage the follicle and your hair will fall out in that area. Yep.

We suggest keeping your elastic loose, using metal free bands, spray a light shine serum onto your hair before you put it up and NEVER tie it up for sleep. Follow these steps and you won’t go bald! How helpful are we?

We hope this is helped you either realise how well you treat your hair, you do us proud, or made you rethink some of your habits, trust us your hairdresser will thank you!
