Here's the secret to grown up festival fashion.

It’s festival time again and if you look at the festival sections of any clothing store (because, yes, they all have them now) you will see everything glittery, short and sheer. While there is nothing wrong with letting your hair down, having fun and dressing to the occasion, you can find clothing and styles that you feel comfortable in. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to be walking around in hot pants, bras and flower crowns to be stylish at festivals. Here are some styling tips to help you plan out your next festival outfit.

1. Start with denim

You don’t need to be in a pair of barely there shorts to wear denim. Incorporating some form of denim into your outfit instantly injects a cool level. Venture out and try vests or jackets to be in style but still separate from the crowd.

2. Have one key piece and build your outfit around that

A statement piece will make sure that you stand out from the crowd. Whether you choose a graphic print, a standout colour, or an oversized belt, make sure to build the rest of your outfit around it.

3. Stick to the ankle boot

An ankle boot is the perfect shoe to have in your wardrobe. It’s the shoe that goes with everything in your closest and will most likely see lots of action come festival season. A good investment- the ankle means that your feet will be both stylish and comfy while you dance the days and nights away.

4. Classic style accessories

There are plenty of bohemian vibes that festival fashion is infused with. Many of the chicest accessories come straight from the 70s era such as the wide brimmed hat, cross over body bag, and oversized sunglasses. Any of these options will help you with the practicalities of surviving the festival season and by choosing classic accessories, you will be able to wear them all year round.

5. Be practical

The practicality of all those little outfits floating around on the web is easily questionable. If you’re going to be out drinking and dancing all day and into the night you want to make sure that you are comfortable. Keep protected from the sun with hats and sunglasses. Be practical with your bag choice so that you’re hands are free. If you plan on moving around a lot then you may find long pants too restrictive. One tip to remember? Playsuits and porta-loos do not mix.

And finally, festivals aren’t a place for judgement. Everyone is out to have fun, enjoy some music and all round have a good time. If you’re worried about your outfit after arriving at any festival the next step is to find your way to the nearest bar. It’s all about fun. What you wear is a completely personal choice. Whatever you decide remember to always be comfortable and confident.
