Because manners never go out of style.
For most people, the words 'lady' and 'etiquette' conjures up images of June Dally Watkins, with teacup and saucer in hand (pinkie finger extended, of course!) But being a lady doesn't automatically equate with being old-fashioned. In the 21st century, being a lady means having self-respect, etiquette, class and good manners.
Here are eight etiquette rules for the modern woman (pinkie finger optional).
1. Watch what you post on social media
If you're unsure about posting something on Facebook, ask yourself if you would want your grandmother to read it. If not, then don't post it. Always keep your audience in mind, keep your privacy settings updated and remember that social media and alcohol don't mix.
2. Show some decency around the office fridge
If it's not your food, don't eat it! Also, take your leftovers home or chuck them out before they turn into some radioactive nightmare. And don't be THAT person who leaves a pile of dishes in the sink for someone else to clean up unless you want to be universally hated by everyone in the office.
3. Phone on silent and in your bag
Although I know its rude to constantly check your phone (especially in the company of others) I am so guilty of this one. When you have company your phone should be in your bag on silent, not sitting on the table at a restaurant! If you're expecting a call let them know, otherwise your phone should be out of sight.
4. Always arrive on time
Whether it's to work, a birthday dinner or a date. Nothing screams "I'm more important than you!" than showing up late. If you're someone who routinely shows up late, allow a bit of extra time - even if it means waking up half an hour earlier.
5. Mind your language
Of course most people have their own little swear words while others have a really foul mouth, but it doesn't mean everyone else appreciates hearing it. Always be mindful of your audience and know what language you can use and when. There's nothing worse than hearing someone go on a swearing tirade in public, even more so if it's coming from a woman. It isn't very ladylike and it only makes you look like a bit of a bogan.
6. Count your drinks
I'm not saying you can't enjoy a fun night out with your girlfriends but try not to embarrass yourself by getting too carried away. Nothing screams class like getting ushered out of a club by a bouncer because you're off your face. Curb your alcohol intake so you don't wake up the next morning regretting what you did the night before.
7. Dress to impress
There's a difference between dressing well and dressing for the occasion. As much as you might love that plunging black jumpsuit you got yourself for your birthday, wearing it to an interview is hardly the right place to show it off. On the other hand, if you're unsure about the dress code for a job interview, in my opinion its always better to overdress slightly than turn up significantly underdressed for the occasion. Presentation speaks volumes about a person and how much you care about your appearance so always make sure your clothes are freshly clean, crisp and ironed to perfection.
8. Keep your promises
We all know someone who never keeps her promises and we all know how annoying that is. Don't be that person and practice what you preach. If you want people to respect you, they should know you keep your word and be able to trust you.
